Where can I get some independent advice on schools?

Does anyone have ideas on who to talk to? I need to look at sixth form options for one of my children who will need learning support and want to find out what my options are. Any recommendations? - would pay if necessary as long as advice is impartial and independent.

your local careers office / connexions service should be able to help.

Thank you...that's a good idea. I knew Connexions did work experience, didn't know they did the advice side, too.

yes connexions are responsible for impartial information, advice and guidance - mainly around careers advice but they should be able to help. Unfortunately the government are in the process of dismantling this service which means that in some parts of the country there isn't anything at the moment. If that's the case for you, then I would advise attending all 6th form information evenings or if you have missed those then make an appt with the head of 6th form.

Hasn't many Connexions services suffered cuts? I think many of their local offices have even closed. That may affect the quality of advice you may be able to get. You could try an independent agency that specialises in helping parents find the right school, but you need to look around carefully as I've heard of agents that can charge as much as £5,000 - I know, it's crazy! Good luck!

thanks - I'll do that. I've heard other people say that they were promised lots of help before the child started which just didn't materialise so I guess the thing would be to talk to other parents, too.

my DD school had connexions in for careers advice before moving to 6th form and they weren't very useful! seemed to tell her everything she already knew... why don't you search the net for guidebooks/services that advise parents about school choices, i know i used to have a good book called the londons schools guide, i guess a similar thing must be produced for all areas.
