We've googled and binged and even asked Jeeves, but are no closer to knowing and daughter needs the info for her literacy homework. She doesrecollect that the M stands for Metaphor.

Help, anyone?

do you mean a mnemonic?

each of the letters means something to do with grammar?

BarkisIsWilling · 26/01/2012 21:43

Sorry, it is indeed a mnemonic. I was typing in a post-prandial stupor.

hmm. ggogling doesn't hrlp much.
The 'a' may be 'alliteration'.
Can she ask her classmates who were listening Grin or have they gone to bed by now.

I would say it's a mnemonic about figures of speech - a selection of these:

If they are figures of speech, I'd suggest

Analogy/Allegory/Alliteration/Assonance
Personification
Onomatopoeia
Simile
Symbol
U = Euphemism?
Metaphor

Alliteration/Assonance
Personification
Onomatopoeia
Symbol
Simile
U???
Metaphor

(most of those from choux's link Smile)

Could it be APOSSAM, not APOSSUM? Or is the latter written down clearly?

Assonance
Personification
Onomatopoeia
Symbol
Simile
Alliteration
Metaphor

Thanks all, this has been greatly helpful. My daughter will find out what the last vowel is, and I will post back.

Bon weekend. :)
