Help..... My son has just got an E grade in his 1st GCSE maths Module 1, this is after his resit, I want to get a tutor in to help, but he is very reluctant, prob cos its not cool, although no one at school will now apart from his teachers. He wants to go to on to sports teaching, but he is unlikely to get the final results he needs to achieve this. Although he seems to be doing well in other subjects. He is a stubborn bugger and no matter what I say he seems to take it in and agree, but does nothing about it. any ideas on how to persuede him to give a tutor a try.

What was he predicted to get?

If he has a specific idea of careers he wants to aim for, perhaps the best method would be to do some research on the internet, show him all the stuff that will be open to him if he gets his C in Maths and English, then ask him exactly what he plans to do if he misses it.

As a maths teacher, I would say before spending out money on a tutor, find out if he needs a kick up the backside at school. I always feel annoyed on behalf of parents who shell out for tutors if their kids sit and waste the lesson time they get for free. It is possible that his results could be improved to a satisfactory level merely by improving his work at school, and you could work with the school to achieve this.
