cross curricular books for 7 - 11 year olds?

Hi.
Can anyone think of any books for 7 - 11 year olds that will incorporate different subjects. For example for foundation phase (3 -7 year olds) I used ''we're going on a bear hunt'' which if re enacted can link to pe through the physical activity, english through language skills e.g. positional language, science by learning about the environment when outdoors etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

It is a bit broad! I think that we need more information. Are you a teacher looking for a class, or a Home Educator, or just wanting to motivate your DC to read?

Swallows and Amazons springs to my mind. I expect Ransome would turn in his grave at them being viewed as cross curricular resources Grin but they've got history, geography, natural history, science, are written in excellent English and oh, they have just a bit of physical activity too!

Ahh thank you very much i will have a look.
I am a university student its to show the diversity of each subject nowadays and for class activity ideas etc.

How about Stephen Hawking's George's Secret Key to the Universe? Science and literature.

Mr Majelka fossil hunter (think that's the title).

Richard Dawkins' "Magic of Reality" covers a wide range of science topics and myths across a number of cultures. It does have a bit of an "agenda"

mamaLou13 · 12/01/2012 20:43

Wouldn't the richard dawkins one be abit old for them? I need it to be able to incorporate english, science (hopefully) and pe would be great too.

How about 'Tuesday' by David Wiesner (an almost wordless picture book).
I have used it in Year 6 for lots of literacy work, PE (dance), DT (pop-up books). Could also be linked to Science through Forces.

Another possibility is 'Window' by Jeannie Baker.
Again, lots of literacy potential.Geography- the Environment; Science- Life Cycles, Habitats; PSHE- families, growing up. Could probably be linked to PE if you looked at how animals move, or expressing feelings through movement.

You might find Stories for Thinking by Robert Fisher here on Amazon useful. A variety of short stories-generally well known ones and suggestions for discussions and activities-you can of course enlarge upon them.

The Richard Dawkins book is written for children. 10 year old son enjoys it.

GrimmaTheNome · 13/01/2012 13:05

vix - apparently: 'Dawkins has stated that the book is intended for those aged around 12 years and upwards, and that when trialling the book prior to publishing, younger readers were able to understand its content with additional adult assistance.'. Your DS may be a bit ahead of the general curve Smile but sounds like it could be used in a classroom for at least some of the OPs age range.

Michael Morpurgo books are good and cover history, nature and the animal kingdom, human nature and relationships....etc. Some also explore folklore and the impact of beliefs and superstition. My children loves "Why the whales came"

This book incorperates loads of fairytales into one. Its funny, and gripping (so I'm told..) and perfect for 8-13 year olds. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141365612936?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649
