Wakefield Girls High School Junior School?

itsonlyyearfour · 10/01/2012 16:48

Was wondering if anyone had experience of this school for juniors (or even the senior bit!)

We would like to send our DD there for Seniors but for a lot of reasons we are considering earlier entry into the Junior school and was wondering whether anyone would recommend it or not.

We did visit but couldn't really get a feel for it, not sure why!

We visited the senior school when we were considering moving there and really didn't like the feel of the school. DD even had a taster day and said the girls weren't very friendly to her :( We also didn't really get a sense for the school, I think that's where our dislike came from. Ultimately, because we didn't like the school we chose not to move to the area. However it was better than Silcoates if that's an alternative!

Agree it's better than silcoats, but I really do not like the school. I went there (both junior and senior) as a child, which of course you ought to discount as it was a long time ago, but I revisited it a couple of years ago and met the new head, and IMO it hasn't changed much.... Sad The teaching was patchy and sometimes mediocre, and when I spotted some of the same teachers there I did feel funny.

We actually didn't move to that area when we had the possibility as while I'd send a boy to Qegs like a shot, the girls school really is the weakest link. Sorry Sad

Are you tied into looking in that exact geographical area??

Thanks for the posts, very helpful. Without giving too much away, I am equidistant to York (so all the York Schools would be a possibility) and also GSAL. York Schools' only problem being the lack of school buses, but obviously this is not a priority in terms of choosing a school!!

I also have 2 boys and I did think that the boys' school looked more vibrant, but that's just maybe my "first impression".

This is so odd, we actually chose York over Wakefield because of schools. We didn't actually move in the end for family reasons but the DC would have gone to Bootham, it's lovely.

DH is currently working in Huddersfield and we considered moving to Wakefield but have decided on York because of the schools. The city seems to have fantastic state options as well as good privates.

Out of interest, what is the issue with Silcoates? Have this school on my secondary radar for DS2 (who is only 7 so no rush). I have searched MN previously and read mostly positive things I think.

I was just looking on the thread about indies becoming free schools and it reminded me that Bradford Girls' Grammar is becoming a free school - is that too far for you?

DYSLEXIALEEDS · 12/01/2012 23:27

We are starting a primary school in Leeds it will be Mainstream but catering for good provision for all including those with dyslexia

itsonlyyearfour · 13/01/2012 08:41

Whereabouts in Leeds is it?

I am not in Leeds so will not be relevant to me, but I know lots of people who might be interested. Is there a website?

I have one ds at silcoates. He moved from an allegedly much better indi where he was struggling socially, behaviourally and academically (in that he was way behind his predictions).
We moved him at the start of y10, i cannot say how pleased i have been with what silcoates have delivered for him.
Instead of coming out of school each day "how was your day ds2?" - a good answer previously was "crap" Shock
we moved rapidly to good, great, super, excellent. double Shock
He got 6A*, 2A and a B at GCSE - he said to me afterwards re the B, but i only knew about 10 words of German when i joined silcoates.
He is in the sixth form now, and happy, doing well academically, but honestly more than anything (and it was awful being rung by the other school every other week to complain about ds2 did this, said this, is awful because....) he is happy, settle, his own man, helpful at home.
You cannot compare the schools directly with each other, silcoates is not selective in the same way that some other schools in wakefield are, but pastorally is has been fab for ds2, and as you can see above it has delivered academically as well.
