Open University Fees

Sorry if this has been done before, but just wanted to point out that OU fees are going up dramatically from about £700 to £2500 per 60 pt course from Sept 2012; BUT if you register on a course and link to a degree before this time, then you can get your degree at the old rates. There are a number of courses still available including a wide range of short courses. If you are on a low income you could get the degree for free if you link in now, but leave it till Sept 2012 and you will have to apply for a loan instead of a grant. HTH

bumping.... I'm in the middle of mine, with two L2 modules already done, a few more to go. Well worth doing anything that interests you to get in the system so to speak, now.

Good thinking to post it, Pony :)

LadySybilDeChocolate · 08/01/2012 01:03

How do you link to a degree? I've registered for a course starting in Feb but it's not been paid for yet. I may have to deregister as I have to move house so will be unable to pay for it.

MrsShrekTheThird · 08/01/2012 01:16

when you get your login, go on 'studenthome', and on there it is a very simple drop-down options list to click on the qual you want it tou count towards. You can also change this at any time, should you want to.
If you can't pay in one go, check out doing it through OUSBA and pay monthly? :)

LadySybilDeChocolate · 08/01/2012 01:18

I can't pay monthly, I messed up a couple of bills when I was ill so have baad credit. (I'm belledechoc Wink). I wanted to do a creative writing course as it will help my writing. Sad

MrsShrekTheThird · 08/01/2012 01:28

I'd figured out who you are Wink by the chocolat. Grin I can't say our cred rating is anywhere near perfect, they just want to be paid regularly. I know people with little or no credit rating (they're aiming at students, ffs lol) and they still get to use ousba. Worth asking?!

LadySybilDeChocolate · 08/01/2012 01:31

I'll try. I have a CCJ which is paid off now. I was quite ill though but it was still stupid. Sad

Ponyofdoom · 08/01/2012 17:23

OUSBA is not too fussy so you should be OK :-)

OP posts:
LadySybilDeChocolate · 08/01/2012 17:28

I'll give it a try Smile

LadySybilDeChocolate · 08/01/2012 17:40

Darn, registration closed on the 5th Jan Sad

hocuspontas · 08/01/2012 18:01

So an OU degree is now going to cost £15,000? Yet a full-time degree at a 'normal' uni will be £9,000. What's the justification? Sadly my OU degree on hold will never be finished now. Sad

KatyMac · 08/01/2012 18:03

LadySybilDeChocolate - ring them tomorrow anyway, sometimes they can be flexible (not always but it's worth a phone call)

KatyMac · 08/01/2012 18:04

Isn't traditional uni £9k a year? so £27K all in

hocuspontas · 08/01/2012 18:04

Oh, just realised, a 'normal' degree will cost £27,000. Jeez.

LadySybilDeChocolate · 08/01/2012 18:10

I'll try. Thank you Katy Smile

Ponyofdoom · 08/01/2012 21:07

Lady, if you already have a reservation you can register up to 12 Jan for the Jan/Feb courses. The Law courses are open until about 19 Jan. There are also courses starting in May & the short courses I mentioned have several start dates before September so you still have plenty of options! Also the OU might be flexible because people couldn't get through on the 'phones up to 5th Jan.

LadySybilDeChocolate · 08/01/2012 21:17

I tried, it said it was closed Confused I'll check my emails and see if there's a direct link, I used the web site before.

LadySybilDeChocolate · 08/01/2012 21:25

It's only giving me the option to register for October 2012. I'll give them a call tomorrow. Sad

Ponyofdoom · 08/01/2012 22:19

Yes, the website has been 'doctored'! If you 'phone you can register on quite a few courses starting before September, eg arts, science or technology short courses, Openings courses for beginners, business courses starting in May; there are also some psychology and socsci courses in May but some are full up. The phone lines are open 8am-8pm and should be quieter at 8am ish, there have been log waits later in the day. The number is 0845 300 6090

Smile Thank you.

OneMoreMum · 11/01/2012 16:13

It's worth noting that under the new system although the fees will be higher, if you don't already have a degree you should be eligible for a student loan and not have to pay anything up front. It's definitely worth jumping on board now if you already have a degree or alternatively have a low enough income to entitle you to financial support though.

The OU fees in Scotland are only going to be for Scottish residents (don't ask me what happens if you start in Scotland and then move to England). The changes are because of the way the government is providing funding, not because the OU has changed anything.

At the moment, fees for courses starting from September are not available. Details of courses leading to named degrees also seem not to be available until 27 March (even for existing students). However, if you start a course now (or any time between now and September) and link it to a degree later (although the people on the phone can probably do it even if the website won't let you until April), you still qualify for the English transitional arrangements that allow you to study under the current funding arrangements. See www8.open.ac.uk/study/explained/fees-2012.
