Going to 6th Form/FE College away from home?

DN is in Yr11 at a school in N Wales & lives with her parents, she does not like any of the courses on offer at any of the local 6th forms/FE colleges. SIL & DW both went away to FE college at 16/17 in a halls-type arrangement as they wanted to do courses that were not on offer locally.

SIL has asked whether we would consider having DN to come and live with us (we are in Worcestershire) as there is much more choice around here.

I don't have a problem with it in principle (I know we would have to sort out arrangements for money, etc) but I don't know how it works outside your local area particularly between Wales and England - which LEA would pay or would we have to pay privately?

Also, if anyone has experience of having nieces/nephews, etc come to live with you and have any experience of how the practicalities work with their parents for money, etc. would we be advised to get loco parentis (sp?) in case she falls ill,etc as parents would be 2.5hr drive away?

Apologies for the random mish-mash of questions just have a lot going around in my head!

Happy BD all Smile xxx

No answers, I'm afraid, just another question to add to the list: is DN thinking of going to Uni? How would two years in Worcestershire affect her eligibility for the Welsh grant?

Thanks that is a good question! I think she would be ok because her home address would still be in Wales but definitely something to check out!

It's an enormous responsibility, but I'm sure you've considered that. Do you have children of your own? A husband/partner? How do they all feel?

It's a lovely thing to offer to do, but

I am in a civil partnership, DN is on DW's side (her sister's daughter), we don't have children but are considering ttc later next year.

DW and I have talked about it and got as far as the questions above but I think we are both on the same page about being open to it in principle.

Tbh the responsibility does scare me but if she decides not to go to college otherwise, how guilty will we feel? On paper, it would be the best thing for her as where she lives is so small the kids tend not to have enough life experience to be able to move away from home, compete in the job market etc and the job opportunities are so minimal locally (SIL been looking for anything ft for over 2 years and still doing 2 days pw), but obviously there are other things to consider such as moving away from parents, friends, etc.

Aha well that's good that you both agree. Grin What happens when she starts having sex with the man who works behind the bar at your local? She doesn't want you to tell her mum. I would find all those competing loyalties very difficult. In some ways she will come to you as an adult, in other ways not.
