Home Education - Where to start

Okay

I think the time has come to remove youngest child from school.

He is almost 6 and has various problems including Unilateral Hearing Loss, Asperger?s Syndrome (high Functioning Autism), and Attention Deficiency, as well as some physical needs. His present school are not coping although they claim they are.

Where do I start, and what do I need.

I know I need to inform his head teacher and the LEA.

But what basic resources do I need.

I suggest you join Education Otherwise first - you'll receive a contact list so you can find other HE families in your area, and they offer lots of support and advice.

Thanks for that.

sorry, my other post sounded a bit terse - there are anumber of interesting threads on home ed on mumsnet that you might find useful ...

How do you feel about taking ds out of school?

JayzMummy · 12/01/2006 12:30

Tensing.
I home educated J for a year whilst fighting the LEA to provide a placement that better met his needs. He has ASD and a whole host of other problems which include learning difficulties.
Home edding is very rewarding and we certainly saw our son blossom as his self esteem grew BUT it is really hard work.
TBH I dont relly know how I coped. Each and every day I was tied to caring for him in every sense and found I became quite tied to the house.

EG.I couldnt leave the house during the day alone to go and get my hair cut... he wouldnt come with me due to his sensory difficulties. Food shopping had to be done on line and even a trip to the post box had to be done when DH was home fom work so that I could leave J with him.

Are you really sure you want to home ed your DS or is your desire to do so, driven by the lack of understanding and suitable school placement?

If it is because of the lack of suitable placement then I suggest you fight your LEA with all your might to get him into a school that has the relevant provisons for a child with ASD etc.
There are ways and means to do this where you can hold the LEA over a barrel and they will cave in and make the provison available....but be prepared for the fight of your life.

If you want to chat about this off board then I am only to happy do so...my email addy is

my mn user name at yahoo dot co dot uk

good luck....education otherwise is a fab site and you will get loads of support from them if you choose to home ed your son.

Tensing, i am going through the same as you atm.

DS has not been in school properly for 3 months, he is HFA/AS and has trouble with anxiety, we are awaiting a visit from the EWO tomorrow to tell us what our options are, we have got a letter from our GP telling school that DS anxiety is causing him to be ill and that is why he is off school.

We are hoping for him to have a home tutor.
