Any opinions on this school? Am considering moving into catchment area. How hard is it to get into?

Its a great school! My DS is just two and my dad is already planning for him to go! Everybody raves about it.
But every one has different opinions. I am also moving in to the area from Surrey. I think the competition is stiff though. Good luck!

DS is there, and there are a few on here with sons there.

He absolutely loves it. In fact a few years back when DH was out of work, and we spoke of the possibility of moving, he said he would rather board there than move to a new school!

The Headmaster is leaving though, so watch this space (although he wasn't a good as the previous Head - and most of the teachers are fantastic).

Competition is VERY fierce though, so make sure if you move that you are happy with the alternatives. We had an Outstanding Ofsted as our catchment that DD went to, but there are some dire schools in Reading!

Weedy is leaving? Where is he going?

Milliways · 11/12/2011 22:16

Dear Parent

I am writing to inform you that Mr Weeds has been offered the post of Headteacher at Cranbrook School in Kent and has accepted. He will take up the appointment in September 2012. I have said to Mr Weeds that I and, I am sure our school community, are very sorry that he is leaving Reading School. Mr Weeds has successfully led Reading School through a period of great change. He takes with him our very best wishes for every success in his new post.

Ah, similar school.

Nice chap. I worked with him before he moved to Reading.

Milliways · 11/12/2011 22:43

It's weird. both my kids had a new headmaster join their secondary school as they started Yr 7, and another when they were in the 6th form!

icancount · 12/12/2011 09:28

Milliways - thanks for that.

Where do we move to then?? DS y5 at mo. Have to get skates on.
At prep school at moment but things (£) bad so looking to pull out :( :(
DS seems pretty good academically, so might be worth a shot at Reading.
Where are best comps/other grammars at moment?
Ta.

This year, there were about 700 applicants for 100 places at Reading.

icancount · 12/12/2011 09:43

Ooohhhhhhhhh!!!
OK, which back-up schools do I want? Sporty, academic and musical.

The "catchment" is actually huge and boys get the train in from everywhere, so a lot consider the Maidenhead Grammars as well.

Maiden Erlegh school in Earley is very sought after, top state school in this region, as is Little Heath in Tilehurst. Both of those have other schools nearby that are pretty bad, hence the pressure to get into the good ones. It's really not fair.

Milliways · 12/12/2011 10:00

Wokingham also has The Forest School (Boys only - Holt for girls), and there is The Ranelagh school in Bracknell to consider.

icancount · 12/12/2011 10:14

ok. Thanks. Will check these out. Will need regular access to Oxford for work.

There are no Grammars in Maidenhead.

mumblechum1 · 12/12/2011 22:21

The kids in Maidenhead tend to go to Borlase in Marlow.

DSis at Borlase and it's pretty good, generally speaking.

irregularegular · 12/12/2011 22:25

We live in Goring, on the train line and river between Reading and Oxford (work in Oxford). I will consider Reading School when the time comes, but as everyone says it is very competitive and not for everyone. Our local school is Langtree in Woodcote which is very good these days (different story a generation ago) and has an Outstanding Ofsted. Or, across the river in Streatley you are in the catchment for Downs school, which is also very good (until recently it would have been considered much better than Langtree, but that's less clear these days). Or there is a good choice of private schools in the area.

LAlady · 12/12/2011 22:26

There are three coaches going up to Wycombe High and John Hampden, High Wycombe each day, from the Maidenhead area. We are in Cookham and in catchment for SWB although my son started at JH this year. Not in catchment as such, but the catchment went quite wide. Also Royal Grammar still had places this year.

Some children from the area also take the Slough Grammar 11+ exams too.

mumblechum1 · 12/12/2011 22:29

yy, Borlase also have a large catchment area; most of ds's friends live in M'head which isn't even in the same county as Borlase, and there are buses in from there.
