Moving schools - is it selfish?

So DH and I would like to move house once DS1 has finished yr11 (in 5 years), at this point DS2 will be ready to move to secondary (although he has SN and therefore may possibly wouldnt go to our local secondary anyway) and DD will be in year 4. We have been saving really hard to move to a better area.

I once posted about children moving schools in another setion and I was told it was very selfish. Is it? I know that they will be leaving their friends behind. Am I underestimating how difficult it might be? Does anyone have experience?

No its not selfish as it is a decision you are your DH are making for your family. The point you have chosen to move is after DS1's GCSEs, DS2 goes to secondary and DD is at primary school seems the most sensible as no child is in the middle of exams. You will need to make sure you have a new address when you are applying for DS2's secondary place.
It is always hard to move house and to make new friends but imo you have to look to the future and thats what you are doing. Good luck.

It's hardly selfish to want to move to a better area.

Your Year 11 DS may struggle / be upset with you etc with friendship issues. Is he going on to do A Levels? If so, there will be other new students wherever he ends up starting year 12. The Year 7 and Year 4 will be fine as long as they have fairly "normal" personalities.

I moved my own DS at Year 3 and work in a school where kids join and leave all the time - 99% of them don't have any problems settling in and making new friends.

Whoever told you that you were "selfish" sounds like a right jealous cow tbh. Smile

Where are you moving to? The other side of town or the other side of the country?
