DS school using text books from Asda

went in to see Ds teacher today, DS is taught at home in the mornings and at school in the afternoon, asked her what ds was doing in the afternoons and she said they do literacy and numeracy in the morning to to concentrate on that.

I asked her for her advice on what to buy and she said SHE buys text books from Asda and WH Smith and photocopies the work sheets are they are superior to what the Education Authority offer for the children to learn in class!

I was [shocked]

Just buy a text book that follows the national curriculum and work at the level that he is ready to work at she said.

I know that some teachers are left to do their own lesson planning and can use whatever aids and equipment they need as long as it follows the nat. curriculum. Many teachers I know download material from the internet too and photocpy etc. Not sure if it's right but it does go on. have you looked at the content of the book. Does it seem to b ok?

I have used information from the internet, because for the third year running the school I work in doesn't have text books to teach A level from! I spend aroun £200 a year on buying books, software, paper, glue, pens and pencils.

Textbooks that we do have are often poor and not infrequently wrong.

I would be thankful that your son has a teacher who is prepared to put her hand in her own pocket to make up the short fall in funding for the school.

Sadly it is all too common. And as you say, very shocking.

Actually I don't think that's necessarily a really bad thing. I think it must be much more satisfying for a teacher to source their own materials and decide what they're going to use in their own lessons than get spoon-fed by an LEA.

That's with the proviso that they can do the sourcing in paid work time and then claim the costs back from their employers. And I know that doesn't happen in RL, but it should.

Yes, I do like to source my own materials, but I do get a bit fed up of paying for it all.

For example we have no facility to produce coloured over heads in the school at all. We also have one projector that can link to a laptop between 16 of us. There are no interactive whiteboards in the school at all.

So if I was to be sure that I can used coloued pictures in the lesson (and is science this is often vital) I have to print OHPs at home. It gets to be a real pain.

And while I don't mind sourcing some lessons each day, to do them all is a bit too time consuming.
