please reassure me I won't be kicked off the Teacher's Pension scheme if I don't strike on Weds!

I am worried after reading a comment on another thread that this was a possibility Shock

I work in an independent school and it has been made clear it would not go down well if we did strike. Please don't flame me for this, I am only looking for answers to my query.

Thanks!

I'm a member of the pension schemerun by my public sector employer. I can't pick and choose the deal applied to the scheme (as you know perfectly well)

Just seems like not being in a union on the ground of hypocrisy is a little pointless when you are going to reap any benefits of industrial action anyway.

mrz · 27/11/2011 21:18

People who don't strike could always refuse the benefits ... if there are any

teaching unions do make it very hard NOT be be hypocritical though.

I am not in a union because I don't believe in striking. But that puts me in a very vulnerable position, potentially. Most unions are not needed in the same way teaching unions are in the unfortunate even of a teacher being accused of inappropriate behaviour with a child. For that reason it's seen as stupid not to be in a union

So if you are against striking but don't wnat to risk teaching without that safety net what are you supposed to do?

FontSnob · 27/11/2011 22:31

Manic, be in a union, vote No to the strike, isn't it better to stand against striking by adding your voice to the No vote, rather than passively standing aside?

For the very reasons that you have mentioned I don't feel that it is sensible for any teacher to not be in a union, because those accusations do happen.

Manic - join Voice. It's the only teaching union (now) with a non-strike policy.

I used to be a member of ATL, because they don't strike. Then they did strike, so I left. Joined the NASUWT temporarily because they were at least negotiating, now left that and am joining Voice.

They are a 'weaker' union, which is why they weren't my first choice on leaving ATL. But they are at lease openly anti-strike.
