Does anybody know of a young paleontologists' club?

That's just it really - my ds is passionate about pre-history and all pre-historic creatures.

He refuses to do any clubs outside school, we don't know of any other children who are as fascinated as him in this subject!

We are in Hampshire but within driving distance of the Jurassic Coast.

There are regular fossil hunting expeditions on that coast, days out and even summer camps for kids, iirc. This one for example.

Not paleontology, but there is a Young Archaeologists club if that would be of interest.

I remember a thread from a while ago about an organisation which ran activity/heritage family activity weekends/holidays and I thought there were paleological ones.

Can anyone remember the thread? It was trying to drum up more bookings (as the MNetter in question was in danger of losing a looked-forward-to treat owing to lack of bookings). I remember that some of them looked really interesting, but didn't make a note of who organised them. Anyone else remember?

Could you contact your local museum or the Natural History Museum to see what they can offer?

Takver · 20/11/2011 13:13

scaevola - that was me (can you tell my dd has similar interests Grin )
Its the Field Studies Council - they're doing a fossil hunting holiday this year again - which hopefully will be more popular . . . But, its in Dale Fort in Pembrokeshire, so rather a long way from the OP!

Thank you so much for posting the name again! It's a shame so much is in Wales (a bit far for us), but they do look excellent courses.

OP - sorry for the hijack!

Have you tried the "Dino Snores" or night safari events at th Natural History Museum? A curator there might also be able to come up with more ideas for clubs or events.

I'd definitely recommend them. We've been on two now, the Seashore adventures (because the fossil one was full) and then the following year the Adventurous Activities one (because we were the only ones booked on the fossil one so it was cancelled Confused ) and we really enjoyed both of them. I think they're good value, too, although the adventurous activities one was a bit more expensive (I guess because of insurance etc for rock-climbing and the like).

Thanks for replying everyone. I am off to have a look at the websites now.

It would be good for ds to at least meet others who are just as interested in prehistory!

Thanks funny!

Is the fossil hunting club the same thing as fossilwalks.com.

Are you close to Lyme Regis?
