Serving wine at PTA evening events

We've got an event coming up and would like to serve wine. Do we need to get a licence? If so what does this involve? What would happen if we didn't? Any advice gratefully received - am a novice. Thanks.

If you are selling alcohol you may need a temporary event licence - speak to the council

Hulababy · 07/11/2011 22:15

Are you selling it or simple serving it?

alittleteapot · 07/11/2011 22:19

idea was to charge for event and give them a glass of wine while there.

you'll need to get a temporary event licence... It's not difficult, just filling in a few forms and paying a fee (£25 ish) but you need to give them a couple of weeks to process it.. so get moving.
You can download the forms from your local council website

If you haven't left yourself enough time to get a licence, you can get round it by using raffle tickets, so that people buy a ticket and 'Win' a glass of wine/can of beer. It's a bit of a faff, but I think it's legal. We have done this in the past.

maybenow · 07/11/2011 23:03

you don't need a license if you're giving the wine away free.

PandaG · 07/11/2011 23:03

raffle ticket idea not really legal. a glass ocf wine included in entry price is ok I think, but applying fo a licence is pretty straightforward tehn you can sell alcohol no problem. However you may need to check with the council, ours has made a blanket decision - no alcohol on school premises for school events as a HandS issue!

mummytime · 07/11/2011 23:16

If you don't have time to get a license you can sometimes get a local pub to apply to cover you with theirs. I'm not totally sure how this works, but DCs school has doen it in the past.
But I think if you give away the wine, or just ask for a donation you are okay.

hermionestranger · 07/11/2011 23:16

Check with your council. Ours make you do a course and get s yearly licence!

NotMostPeople · 07/11/2011 23:24

We've asked for a donation towards the wine, we've always made a profit.

gettingalifenow · 08/11/2011 09:37

Have the entry fee inlcude a glass of wine and you dont need a licence

propatria · 08/11/2011 10:33

This is a perennial question and sadly donations, entry fees etc etc still mean that you need a licence, you cant get around it that way,if you could everyone would do,raffle prizes are exempt but if you are providing alc for consumption you need a licence
To all those schools going down the donation, ticket route,be very carefull, more than one school In know has got into serious trouble when a parent reported them.

DD's school regularly serves wine on the premises, although I don't think we have ever paid for it. It is served after big assemblies, at PTA type events, etc. For the latter it is included in the price of the ticket for the event - ie quiz night, etc.

ruddynorah · 08/11/2011 17:37

You can't include it in entry fee or raffle fee or any other payment method. If they pay for it you need a licence. Don't see how a pub could cover it as their licence is for their own premises. Your premises doesn't have a premise licence thus you need a temporary events licence.

Hulababy · 08/11/2011 17:38

Forgot to add, I think DD's school does have a licence in order to do this.

Tonksforthememories · 08/11/2011 17:38

Yes, you'll need a temporary licence. TBH though we've always made most on the bar, so getting a full event licence may be more worth your while!

ruddynorah · 08/11/2011 17:43

I licensed school? Really?
