school christmas parties, what happens at your childs?

I'm interested in what happens at other school christmas parties.

When I was at primary school we would have some dancing, hocky koky and such like. Then we would have a party tea of sausage rolls, cakes etc.

At dd's school they just have the dancy part and that's it. They don't seem to get any party food. P1-P3 get a present from santa, usually a selection box. I think it's strange that they don't get any party food.

Do other schools do party food?

Ours do party food - a list goes up on the classroom door of all the food they need and people put their names down against one item.

They play musical bumps and statues and games that they make in the classroom, like pin the tail on the donkey.

We had to contribute a plate or packet each from a list but otherwise I think it was a pretty low key affair held in the classroom. A few games and a bit of music. Santa visited for their Christmas lunch. Both were held on the same day.

They did at ours today. Each year group put up a sheet requesting parents to sign up to bring something - there was a list of what they wanted and we just shared it out between us. Then they had games and dancing in the hall for a bit and off back to the classrooms for the food. I went in to help put the food out onto plates for Yr1 and serve food to the Reception class. Very sweet. The staff worked it so that they were tired and hungry before they ate, so that they were completely docile afterwards!

Ds1 (Yr1) had his party today. Parents were asked if they could bring either some food or a small donation towards the cost of buying something if possible. Each child was given a present as Father Christmas visited each of the classrooms. Ds1 really enjoyed it.

From the (limited!) information I've gleaned from DD they play party games in their own class room and then move on to the next classroom for different games etc (only 5 classes in the school). Each child has to take in some party food and its all shared out I think.

On the same day they also have a Disco early evening.

Linnet, some of us would be delighted about not having party food at school Christmas parties. Remember - you are at the mercy of whatever everyone else takes, and some of it can be truly dreadful. My children's school does not seem to be doing Christmas parties this year (either that or I haven't been reading classroom doors with sufficient diligence), much to my relief. Not that they're doing any work - it's all films and games as far as I can tell.

We pay £1.50 contribution, school provides the food and organises the party. They play games, have a dance, and the teachers dress up.

Tbh I don't think food is essential. They have the party in the afternoon straight after lunch - it's not a time of day when they would usually be eating, so why do they need food?

NotQuiteCockney · 20/12/2005 07:53

We are all randomly assigned food to bring in. So DS1's vegetarian friend got asked to bring in chicken sandwiches.

They have food, santa, gifts, and go home. It's only a two-hour day. Bit of a hassle. And DS1 recognised Santa as one of the blokes who drives the school buses.

The whole school goes to the pantomime in the morning, then we have the party food for lunch when we get back (emphasis on sandwiches, rather than cakes). Then, games for about an hour and then home time.

Parents sign up on a sheet outside each classroom to provide party food, paper plates, cups etc. A couple of parents from each class go into school when we're at the pantomime to set up the classrooms and then stay to help serve etc. It's a fab day!

I helped at my dds this year so i Know! (smug emotican!)
We played games in the hall, pass the parcel, musical bumps etc, then back to classes for food, and a visit from Santa
