Would you like to reminisce with me about school assemblies?

DH and I were talking about the 'Come and Praise' book, and singing remembering the songs.

Does anyone else remember songs such as Autumn Days and Cross over the road my friend? Which others were there?

Can we put this thread in Classics?

I can't bear to lose all these great songs again.

Did I really just type that? Blush

JennyPiccolo · 30/09/2011 00:20

My wee school
Is the best wee school
The best wee school in glesca
The only thing thats wrang wae it
Is the baldy heided maister
He goes tae the pub on saturday
He goes tae the kirk on sunday
Tae pray tae the lord tae gie him strength
Tae shout at the weans on monday!

JennyPiccolo · 30/09/2011 00:21

I dunno how we ended up singing that in assembly, now that i think about it.

OhMyGolly · 30/09/2011 00:36

Oh I love this thread, went to a Catholic primary so we sung quite a lot of them, I loved the more dirgy ones, Abba Father, Ave maria, the "where you there, where you there" ones.

I'm more of an agnostic these days, although didn't ever have any kind of strong faith in the beginning. I do sometimes really regret not getting my children into a catholic school though I couldn't be arsed to lie.

I do think though faith or not, the traditions and stories and songs are lovely, I loved the May procession and what not (not so keen on confession mind) I somehow think my children are missing out Confused.

OhMyGolly · 30/09/2011 00:38

Actually because of this thread I'm going to drag my children to mass this Christmas Blush.

mancinleics · 30/09/2011 04:22

LittleMiss - yep, that's the one! I didn't want to put up the lyrics in casectheir copyrighted or something. I sing that one all time to DD. Not a hymn but lovely all the same.

CupOfBrownJoy · 30/09/2011 06:22

OhMyGolly if you liked the dirgy catholic ones do you remember "Gifts of Bread and Wine"? You could go off and make a cup of tea between some of the lines...

Gifts of bread and wiiiiiine

Gifts we ooooooffffffeeerrrrrrr

Fruits of laboooouuuuurrrrr

Fruits of loooooove
Taken
Offered......
Sanctified

God it was boring......

silkenladder · 30/09/2011 07:19

10, 10, now is the hour
9, 9, activate power
8, 8, switch the ignition
7, 7, starting the mission, etc.

The Sauce will be with us always.

I only 'got' Blast Off! when I finally watched Star Wars aged 17 Blush. We also did Noah, Sweeney Todd, Rip van Winkle and Jonah. I spent yesterday singing Ninevah City, so thanks to the person who posted that.

youarekidding · 30/09/2011 07:30

tequila great thread and I remember most of these. My favourites are Autumn days and magic penny.

Anyone remember the wiseman built his house upon the rock?

Tequilamockinbird · 30/09/2011 07:39

Oh yes, we need to keep these songs around forever

MNHQ, can we move it to classics please?

Never thought this would be so popular! Thought I was the only sad person who had remembered so many words, I'm astounded that some of you remember the song numbers Grin

insanity the golden cockerel, one of my all time favourites, thanks for reminding me.Thanks

nokissymum · 30/09/2011 08:09

Great thread! Also in the "morning has broken" hate camp, and loved "when a knight won his spurs". We also used to sing some other "folksy" songs at our school from a very hard purple back book. How about these:

Wind a bobbin up
Pull pull clap clap clap
Point to the celing, floor, windows, door
(with mad gestures to see who could do it fastest! Loved it! was my favourite Grin)

I know a girl, that you dont know
Eliza, eliza,
Prettiest girl i ever did see

And

Bobby shafto's gone too seeeeea!
Silver buckles on hs kneeeee!
He'll come back and marry meee!
Pretty bobby shafto!

Or
Ive been to harlem, ive been to dover
Ive travelled this wide world all over over over
3 times over
Drink what you have to drink and turn the glasses over!
(drunken sailor songs at school assembley, Grin nice!)

AWimbaWay · 30/09/2011 09:27

nokissymum, they sing wind the bobbin up at all the baby/toddler groups I go to.

Fimbo · 30/09/2011 09:32

Stand up, stand up for Jesus. Or something like that.

Is Ds's school harvest festival in church later, I must ask him what they sang.

bilblio · 30/09/2011 09:51

I've been laid awake since about 5am, (too hot and pregnant to sleep) with half of these songs going round my head.
All you lot who are remembering the none religious ones need to get into folk music. I still sing them all. :)

Tequilamockinbird · 30/09/2011 09:51

Ah yes, Girls Brigade, we sang there too!

My God is so big, so strong and so mighty there's nothing that he cannot do

And

Jesus' love is very wonderful, Jesus' love is very wonderful, Jesus' love is very wonderful, ohhhh wonderful love
Because it's so high you can't get over it, so low you can't get under it, so wide you can't get round it, ohhhhh wonderful love

And songs to learn spellings...
c and a together make ca, ca, ca ca, then you take a t and put it on the end, c a t spells CAT!

I know three different tunes to 'Oh Jesus I have promised'

Does anyone remember this one?

How did Moses cross the red sea,
How did Moses cross the red sea,
How did Moses cross the red sea,
How did he get across?

Did he swim, NO NO
Did he ??? NO NO
Did he ??? NO NO
Did he ??? NO NO NO NO
Did he ??? NONO
Did he ??? NO NO
How did he get across?

God blew with his wind
Puff puff puff puff
He blew just enough
Nuff nuff nuff nuff
And through the sea he made a path
That's how he got across!

And one about Jonah and the whale, but I can't remember all of it, it was very jaunty, and a bit went:-

When Jonah sank into the sea
The Lord he didn't fail
Although the sea was tropical he sent along a whale
[couple of lines]
"And if you'll only come and save me
Then I'll do as you command,
Instead of treading water
Let me tread upon the land"

wildfig · 30/09/2011 11:13

I have read through the entire thread hoping I wasn't the only one with this going through my head:

Look for signs that summer's done
Winter's drawing near
Watch the changing colours come
Turning of the year
[painful ratchet up into higher register] See the flowers' final blaze
In the morning's misty haze
And sing a thankful song of praise
Autumn time is heeeere

For some reason, as soon as I finished that, my internal jukebox has gone straight on to 'Who built the ark? NOAH! NOAH!'

ScatterChasse · 30/09/2011 11:16

Who built the ark?
Brother Noah built the ark.

Then in came the animals two by two
Then elephant and the kangaroooooo...

FreckledLeopard · 30/09/2011 11:35

I remember a particularly depressing song:

Think of a world without any flowers,
think of a wood without any trees,
think of a sky without any sunshine,
think of the air without any breeze:
we thank you, Lord, for flowers and trees and sunshine;
we thank you, Lord, and praise your holy name.

I remember feeling distinctly maudlin when singing that one.

Our version of 'We Three Kings' was as follows:

'We Three Kings of Orient Are
One in a taxi, one in a car,
One on a scooter, blowing his hooter,
Smoking a long cigar...

ooooohhhhhh

Star of Wonder, Star of Light
Find a box of dynamite
Light the fuse, off we go,
All the way to Mexico' Grin

nokissymum · 30/09/2011 11:39

The animals went in two by two
Hurrah!hurrah!
The animals went in two by two
Hurrah!hurrah! (higher pitch!)

nokissymum · 30/09/2011 11:41

Jesus loves me this i know
For the bible tells me so!
Little ones to him belong
They are weak but He is stronggggggg!

Yeeeess Jesus loves me!
Yeeerees Jesus loves me!

nokissymum · 30/09/2011 11:43

biblio but they dont sing folksies in school assembley anymore, do they ? Wink

Quenelle · 30/09/2011 11:43

Most of these sound very 70s to me.

I hate to say it but you children of the 80s have been fobbed off with 70s shit.

And the song sheets were very well thumbed ditto paper, usually in a lovely bright orange hue.

cheesesarnie · 30/09/2011 11:46

op i love those songs!!!

'no i mustnt forget,no i mustnt forget,to say a great big thankyou i musnt forget'
