Would you like to reminisce with me about school assemblies?

DH and I were talking about the 'Come and Praise' book, and singing remembering the songs.

Does anyone else remember songs such as Autumn Days and Cross over the road my friend? Which others were there?

OMG what an evocative thread. I long for the days when I didn't ache if I sat cross-legged for more than ten seconds.

Don't know if it was in Come and Praise, but I loved 'Come down Zaccheus! Down from the tree! Come down Zaccheus, give the Lord his tea.' I had visions of Zaccheus giving Jesus a plate of fishfingers, chips and beans.

OriginalPoster · 29/09/2011 16:36

Who's that sitting in the sycamore tree
It's Zaccheus give the Lord his tea

HappyFinnish · 29/09/2011 16:39

I remember no songs but recall Mr Hurd's screech as my friend crashed the piano lid onto his fingers.

Kladdkaka · 29/09/2011 16:42

My favourite was:

I have seen the golden sunshine
I have watched the flowers grow
I have listened to the songbirds
And there's one thing that I know
They were all put there for us to share by someone so divine
And is you're a friend of Jesus
CLAP! CLAP! CLAP!
You're a friend of mine.

Blimey, didn't realise I still knew all the words.

housemum · 29/09/2011 16:44

DD2 is singing "the ink is black, the page is white" I guess the headteacher had the same influences as us! (It's a C of E Primary)

I still have Apusskidu :)

Kladdkaka · 29/09/2011 16:47

Oh and a right Catholic weepy-wailey...

Ave Maria
Grazia Plena
Dominus
Takuum
Benedicta too

All I have I give you
Every dream and wish are yours
Mother of Christ
Mother of mine
Present them to my Lord

Rpt dodgy latin chorus...

(excuse me for the bad Latin and possible wrong words, I am now a very excommunicated lapsed Catholic!)

You are the first person in world I have come across in adulthood who knows this song. I was beginning to think I'd imagined it. I could only ever remember the first verse (yours is the second)

As I kneel before you
As I bow my head in prayer
Take this day
Make it yours
And fill me with your love.

cumbria81 · 29/09/2011 16:51

I still have my Come and Praise book from 1992. I nicked it on the last day of year 6 because I wanted to be able to sing the songs at home {geek emoticon}

workhomelifebalanceisrubbish · 29/09/2011 16:55

love this thread...makes me wish my dc went to a c of e school like me...just so they could sing these hymns....

MissBeehiving · 29/09/2011 16:55

Ooh I remember these. We also used to have an Assembly on Friday afternoon and the last song was always;

We're going home

We're going home

We're going home to Dad and Mum
It's time to go

It's time to go

Because the day is nearly done
And now we thank you Lord, keep us this night
Quite safe from harm til morning light
We're going home

We're going home

So goodnight to everyone

I liked that

Jdub · 29/09/2011 16:56

I take the geek prize regarding hymn books - we were given ours once we'd got to a certain point on the reading scheme at infants, and I used to ask if I could sit and read my hymn books at playtime sometimes!

piratecat · 29/09/2011 16:56

very evocative thread!

Jesus bids us shine
With a pure, clear light,
Like a little candle
Burning in the night.
In this world of darkness
We must shine?
You in your small corner,
And I in mine.!!

and does anyone remember the infamous 'Found a peanut' song, circa 1976, in Wales, for coach journeys?????!!

RubyLovesMayMay · 29/09/2011 17:01

I havent read all 16 pages of this thread, but from the first 5 that I have, can I just say that you guys have made a hot, flustered, tired pregnant young woman smile and spontaneoulsy break out in song today

So thank you Thanks Grin

Thanks tablefor3, have not come across anybody who knew about maisy dotes until now.

MandaHugNKiss · 29/09/2011 17:23

We sang virtually every one mentioned, including some of the more hippy/folky ones...

Didn't see:

If I had a hammer, I'd hammer in the morning,
I'd hammer in the evening,
All over this land.
I'd hammer out danger! I'd hammer out a warning!
I'd hammer out the love between my brothers and my sisters,
Alllllllllllllllllllll over this land.

nickschick · 29/09/2011 18:04

Re 'jet planes waiting in the air to be refuelled' I always thought it was the smokey cold breath you get on a frosty morning? it looks like the lines in the air a jet plane leaves behind?

LynetteScavo · 29/09/2011 18:09

ScaredyDog, Can't believe you've never heard of "Oh Jesus I have promised"! Friends of mine had it at their wedding just because they knew everybody would know it and sing along. Grin I went to a state school where the teacher would play it really fast, in a sort of Jazz way, then I went to a private school where it was played really, really slowly. Summed up both schools, really,

Kladdkaka · 29/09/2011 18:10

Did anyone else aspire to be the kid who got to change the sheets on the overhead projector or was that just me?

LynetteScavo · 29/09/2011 18:15

I really wish my DC knew:

Autumn Days

Give me Joy In My Heart

There is a green Hill Far Away

When I Knight Won His Spurs

Come By Yar M' Lord (or whatever!)

Lord of the Dance

We Plough The Fields and Scatter........I am Shock that they don't know this.

The board is black the chalk is white, together we learn to read and write, to read and write....

MerryMagdalene · 29/09/2011 18:15

Haven't read the whole thrad, but remember this so well!

Our Headteacher liked 'Water of life', so we had to sing it practically every day.

My favourite was 'One More Step'.

LynetteScavo · 29/09/2011 18:17

Joins in with Kladdkaka "I've seen the light, I've seen the light, and that's why my heart sings, I've heard the"....What's the next bit? Confused

Tequilamockinbird · 29/09/2011 18:17

Waaaaaater, water of life, Jesus gives us the water of life

Grin love that one!

OP posts:
Kladdkaka · 29/09/2011 18:18

Our Headteacher liked Morning Has Broken. We hated it because we hated her. We used to call her Grottbags because she looked like the witch in Emu's Pink Windmill.

Kladdkaka · 29/09/2011 18:18

... I've known the joy, I've known the joy that loving Jesus brings. :o

Tequilamockinbird · 29/09/2011 18:19

I woke DD up this morning by singing and dancing at her door ...

Why don't you build yourself a word? Build yourself a word with an ing, to say it's happening. Take happen, and ing, build yourself a word. All together now, happening, happening!

She wasn't impressed Sad
