Would you like to reminisce with me about school assemblies?

DH and I were talking about the 'Come and Praise' book, and singing remembering the songs.

Does anyone else remember songs such as Autumn Days and Cross over the road my friend? Which others were there?

Tequila - I know the one you mean, but alas I can only remember a little more:

"The animals came by two by two by twoooo by twooooo"

..what you said..

then:

"The animals came by two by two, the elephant and the kangaroo and they all something something something something"

I think!

Sparklees · 29/09/2011 11:31

Oooh, here you go! www.singup.org/songbank/song-bank/song-detail/view/21-the-animals-went-in-two-by-two/

Excerpt:

The animals went in two by two. Hurrah! Hurrah!
The animals went in two by two. Hurrah! Hurrah!
The animals went in two by two,
The elephant and the kangaroo,
And they all went into the ark, for to get out of the rain.

The animals went in three by three. Hurrah! Hurrah!
The animals went in three by three. Hurrah! Hurrah!
The animals went in three by three,
The wasp, the ant and the bumblebee,
And they all went into the ark, for to get out of the rain.

The animals went in four by four. Hurrah! Hurrah!
The animals went in four by four. Hurrah! Hurrah!
The animals went in four by four,
The great hippopotamus stuck in the door,
And they all went into the ark, for to get out of the rain.

and so on and so forth..

Nobody remembers the 'By Brother Sun' one then? It was bloody jaunty. Not hymn like at all. I used to love the days when we had that one.

BIL's bf at primary school was knocked off his bike in a hit and run accident and killed. The children all sang 'One More Step Along The World I Go' at his funeral. It was a few months before he would have sung it himself in the leaving ceremony. I can't even listen to it anymore.

And SIL had Make Me A Channel Of Your Peace at her funeral and I just couldn't get through it.

It's funny how these songs stay with you. I was sure I didn't know the When A Knight Won His Spurs one and then I heard the first line on YouTube and could sing along with it.

Tequilamockinbird · 29/09/2011 11:31

Sparklees, YES! The end is dum dum dum de dum, trying to get out of the rain?

And I could sing the theme to Through The Dragon's Eye if you wanted me to. I won't though.

Primary school infected me with many things from an arsenal of songs I don't need or necessarily even like to a love of custard.

Oops x-posted, stupid iPhone not updating properly!

Our teachers used to get half the kids to sing 'Lets all go down the Strand' and the other half to sing 'have a banana' between every line. Looking back I can see that the headmaster was completely bonkers.

I used to like Spring has sprung, the grass is riz, I wonder where the birdies is :)

jenfraggle · 29/09/2011 11:34

One that always sticks in my mind is Oh Lord Hear My Prayer as the first bit was always done as a solo by the same person. We didn't like her much and she would always take a big breath through her nose between each line that was really noisy. We used to take the piss something awful behind her back.

peanutsmuggler · 29/09/2011 11:40

So many memories!

Don't think this ones been mentioned yet...

Don't build your house on the sandy land
Don't build it too near the shore
Oh it might look nice but you'll have to build it twice
Oh you'll have to build you house once more

Can also remember singing he's got the whole world in his pants instead of hands.

MyMelody · 29/09/2011 11:45

MyMelody · 29/09/2011 11:47

MyMelody · 29/09/2011 11:52

BrigitBigKnickers · 29/09/2011 12:26

Showof Hands- By Brother Sun was called "The Song of St Francis" and was in "Come and Praise" 2.

I always used to get told off by my staff for playing this one too fast as it's quite wordy (am music teacher). Kids loved it though- was wondering what to do in singing assembly next week

Tequilamockinbird · 29/09/2011 13:31

Ooh another one has come back to me, not from Come and Praise though.

Something about church bells maybe?

'clingety clang, clingety clang. But of course, of course, it wasn't right, for the bells to be ringing so lateeeee at nighttttt'

Any ideas?

www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-Come-Praise/dp/0563345802/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1317300904&sr=1-3

£3.83 on Amazon, it's not quite the original but it's got them all in there. For that price I think I might be adding it to my next order!! Grin

exorbitclamp · 29/09/2011 14:55

I blubber everytime I hear the children sing Autumn Days at parents assembly.

Did not sing it at my school though so am a bit late too it, glad I've heard it now though.

At my school we sang about Maisy dotes and dozy dotes, haven't a clue what that one was about.

ArmageddonOuttahere · 29/09/2011 14:59

RE Autumn days, has anyone ever actually seen "jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled" ? Confused

ArmageddonOuttahere · 29/09/2011 15:00

And if so, is it a phenomenon exclusive to Autumn? Confused Confused

Ponders · 29/09/2011 15:02

I imagine they could think of absolutely no other rhyme for jewelled Wink

OriginalPoster · 29/09/2011 15:14

Hands to work and feet to run
Gods good gifts he gave to you
Hands and feet he gave to us
to help each other the whole day through

Eyes to see and ears to hear
Gods good gifts e gave to you
Eyes and ears he gave to us
To help each other the whole day through

Etc

OriginalPoster · 29/09/2011 15:15

We thank you oh lord for the joys of the town
The buses and lorries that roar up and down
Shop windows and playgrounds
And swings in the park
And street lamps that twinkle in roads after dark

DorcasGailen · 29/09/2011 15:16

Away in a Manger was one of my favourites. I also remember a song that went a long the lines of "my old man said follow that van and dont dilly dally on the way"
