you know private schools, is it true that if your child is struggling performance wise, they can be booted out?

right i know you have to pay to send your child to a private school, and i know our school you have to sit an entrance exam to get in.

ok, fair enough

but what happens if you get your child in, then they are struggling?
can the schools evict the pupils that are not performing?

we are hoping dd will attend our local state school, which is excellent, but over subscribed, and even thought we live in the right catchment area, and she attends a feeder school,it doesn't mean seh will get in, so if dd doesn't get into out local state, we have been considering private for her from senior school.
as the other state schools are dire.

shes just started at a fantastic state primary.

I don't think you should be worry about this when your DC just barely started reception, OP.
Depends on the private school. Ask them how much support they will give if your child struggles. You are paying them for that service as much as anything.

I think it's a very valid question, and one you ought to ask the Head when you see him/her to talk about the possibility of a place. All of them differ. FWIW, I would not send a child to a school which would kick them out if they were not performing well as long as the child was trying. But equally, the school should not get into that position. An entrance testing process isn't just a random pass/fail mark, or certainly shouldn't be!!!! (I'm sure it is in some schools) It should reflect a child's strengths and weaknesses so that together the child's education can continue in a way that helps the child exceed their potential.

On occasion, I can see a situation where a child stops trying and if they really can't be arsed after a suitable period of increasing encouragement and help, perhaps a change of schools is the right thing.

Until league tables are purely based on "value added" they'll be no motive other than a school's individual good nature I guess Sad. But that's something you can try and judge at interview.

Beetle Name and shame the school!

Really Custardcake? Because when I was teaching in FE we did a roaring trade in ex private school students who suddenly found there was no place for them when their grades weren't good enough Hmm

Yes but you haven't had to pay loads of money to the school before it kicks your child out at a state school.

For what its worth , I partly blame my friend for her situation as she moved her child into private prep from state infants to dodge the exam at junior level as she already had a suspicion that her DD was not very academic but ahe wanted her to go to her old school.

My DS1 is on a state comp and he has to bet Bs at GCSE to go into the 6th form they likes DS2 independent school are looking at their place in the league tables.

If they are struggling I wouldn't want them to stay-very demoralising for them.

wigglybeezer · 25/09/2011 19:54

Custard, that's scary, I'm actually quite glad that there are no grammars in Scotland (although it probably explains why our local independents are oversubscribed) as then there would be even more schools that I would feel our family was excluded from despite my DSs many good qualities.
