how far 5yrs old can travel to school - HELP

Mums - help - we recently moved into new area - after long and difficult process of schoo; application my child has been offered a place in primary school which is 5 miles away from home!!!! Is that acceptable?? HELP!!!

I think if that's the only school that has places then yes it is (in the LEA eyes)- the LEA are then obliged to provide transport if it is a school they have allocated over 2mls from your home.

Sounds hard though. Sad

What year group is your DC on? Have you gone on the waiting lists of closer schools? Or considered an appeal?

The furthest walking distance for this age group is 2 miles so the above poster is correct and the LEA have to help with transport costs.
Although this does seem a long way if you are in a town or city, in many rural areas it would be normal for children of this age to travel this far.
The usual advice is to accept the place for now but to stay on the waiting lists at your local schools until a place comes up.
