quick question about drinking at school

My son is in yr 1. They are all expected to take in water to drink throughout the day but he doesn't seem to drink anything while he is at school - he is always really thirsty when he gets home.

Is it reasonable to expect the teacher to remind the class to have a drink (my ds says he forgets to during the day) or do teachers expect children of this age to just remember themselves? Not sure whether to have a word with his teacher tomorrow or not.

Are you sure that he's not drinking in school? My dd used to tell us that she never got any drinks at school either, but when I questioned the teacher it turns out that she did. Kids say anything, I'd check with the teacher. If he's been working hard and doing a lot of physical exercise then he will be thirsty when he comes home.

At my DS school they have 2 short periods through the day when they are told to collect their water bottles and have a drink if they wish, plus they also have a carton of milk.

My ds is in reception and is also like a camel. They have named water bottles provided by the school and they can drink them any time they like. DS does not. I think he just doesn't think about it. I make sure he has a large drink with his breakfast. He has milk at breaktime and I put a carton of drink and a drinking yoghurt in his lunchbox. He knows he must drink both of those otherwise his computer time is confiscated. I make sure he has a drink as soon as he gets home with me and we sit down and we talk about his day.

I too don't know what else to do. Though I feel with his current intake it just about scraps through as OK.

Have a word with his teacher, it can't do any harm. But then will she remember? Will she only prompt him once? You could say as I have done that if the drink is not drunk, then there is forfeit. Also, what happens at break time and lunchtime? Does he get a drink with his lunch? It's so tricky isn't it?

Thanks all I'll mention it I think. Cliff - I am sure he does drink with his lunch as they provide water but I don't think that's enough. I can see from the boittle he brings home that it has barely been touched. They did have a fountain in the playground and he told me he drunk from that but it's been turned off for the winter (fear of frozen pipes!)

In DDs class (yr1) they have a basket in the centre of their tables where they keep their water bottles and can help themselves through the day.
However DDs bottle comes home every day with exactly the same amount in, as does her lunchtime drinks bottle.
She just never drinks unless you stand over her and make her so we make sure we do that mornings and when she gets home
