Hi,
Really struggling with my trio, we were told not to teach them their tables or alphabet when they started school, now in yr 3 suddenly they are saying they need to know their 2,3,5 and 10 x`s tables by Christmas. It may sound easy but I just cannot get all three to sit and sing it as we used to do, what would work?

Off the wall but worked for us! DD was skipping and I was singing the 3x table over and over and over again. Next day she knew it..worked for us weirdly

I didn't know they still did times tables - glad to hear that they do! Aren't they being taught it at school? Could you sit them down one at a time?

Hi,
No they dont do it at school but we are expected to do it at home with them, hence this weekends homework consisited of one sheet of maths with 60 xs tables to be answered, how can they if they don1t know them? Its very hard to try and get 1 to 1, we have tried all ways but nothing seems easy! Someone told me they used to teach their children with Carol Vorderman videos, are they still about?

This website helped DD (Y4) no end over half term with her 7 and 8 times tables which she needed to get quicker on.

You can buy the prog for about a tenner or use it online if you don't mind 'FOr evaluation only' scrawled across it.

Her favourites were One player table mountain to start and Time table (beat the clock) when she had gained confidence.

BTW it works best with internet explorer. If using firefox you'll get a tiny pciture.

We throw ball rhythmically. Go upstairs counting in 2s, 3s etc. My Tables Box - borrowed one and don't know who made it but you can make your own. On small card write out each sum in a table separately, also same for division of table, answers on back. Child goes through them answering out loud. Turns over to self check. Any unsure go in a separate pile. Go over them.. You can set a time limit to check they are doing them automatically eventually. Sounds boring but mine like it. Have different tables on different coloured bits of card. Keep each pile with an elastic band round them.
A good cdrom is What to do when you can't learn your times tables - Steve Chinn??
Colouring sheets - colour all multiples of 7 green etc. Put up a poster on the back of the loo door.

If they are not sure of the concept use blocks or colour in squares on paper - think Carol Vorderman does it.

Hi. I wrote a times tables 'game' a while ago to help my daughter - kershaw kids classroom - click on the times tables option.

I use a card game, it works like SNAP. Make cards up using a mix of different numbers. Divide the group of cards in two. Each player holds their cards face down and simultaneously turns one over. The first player to correctly identify what the result of the two cards multiplyed together is gets both cards to be put on the bottom of the pile. If they both get it at the same time, they get one card each The winner is the one who gets the whole pile in the end.

If you want to extend it to three players, you could have an older sibling as a referee who adjudicates on who was first and whether or not they are right. This game works extremly well with sibling rivalary
