Ah bless.

Like DD with yellow. Despite her good language she still mispronounces this as lellow - and cannot undertand why I say it doesn't start with the sound l!

lalaa · 20/11/2005 22:29

although I am now slightly obsessing about what my dd (just 3) can and can't do, it is helpful to know what else other little ones are doing at this age and gives me something to think about in terms of engaging her further. letters in the bath is a great one.
dd can count to 14 then gets lost. no writing yet. just starting to recognise one or two letters. recognises some numbers (obsessive about the number 6 at the moment (and 3 as it was all over her cards). draws a face and can tell me what the bits of the face are. knows most of her colours except the boring ones (white, black, brown, grey). knows basic shapes. talks and talks and talks and talks.

bobbybob · 20/11/2005 22:40

Ds is younger at 2yr 10 months but can count to 20, like hulababy's dd misses out 15 quite a bit. He can recognise numbers up to 12 because they are on a clock and then just says it's a 1 and a 3 for 13. he also does numbers up to 10 in Maori. He can add up to 5 without having to actually count each object.

He can find his name on a list - but then Bob would be about the easiest one! He can also pick the words, "blob" (it's like me with an "l" mummy!), "nose", "hose", "pizza" and "exit" out of a book. He knows his letters, but the phonetics people would be deeply ashamed of me because he knows their names not the sound, but will point to the right one when I make the sound.

He will type his name into the computer, but give him a pen and its just 3 straight lines.

On the minus side he can't dress himself and probably will still be in nappies when he starts school.

Dodsey · 20/11/2005 22:56

FFS give me a gin now, I've given birth to the village idiot!!!

stripey · 21/11/2005 20:52

ds2 I 3y 2months. His speach isn't always clear (but he suffered from glue ear) but is mainly understandable. I haven't even asked him to try to dress himself but he can use the toilet by himseslf and wash his hands. He can read and spell his own name and type it on the computer but doesn't really know any other words. He adores Thomas and knows everything about the engines, will often talk to them and make up games with them.

His other favourite pass time is playing on Cbeebies/Thomas/Nick Jr website which he demands if I try to use the computer. He can use the mouse like an expert and plays most of the games withuot my help although his 5 yo brother often plays with him.

He can count to 20 & also often misses 15?? He has know his colours and shapes for ages.

stripey · 21/11/2005 20:56

forgot to add he can throw a great tantrum when he doesn't get his own way.

zebratwizzler · 21/11/2005 21:04

DD is 4+2 m and can almost count to 20 (usually misses 13), recognises 1 2 3 4 5 (no more). Reading words or writing her name -- you must be joking!!

So, obviously at 3y+5m, she didn't do any of those things, yet.

DS recognised & counted numbers up to 10 by 3+3m, though, but he never drew anything or wrote his name until just before he was 5; now I think he's better at drawing than most of his class [BOAST].

I am always very impressed at how advanced for their age many children are on MN, def. mine are more "ordinary". I think I'm grateful for it.

northerner · 21/11/2005 21:13

My ds ds is 3.7 and he can count to 14 then it all goes pete tong! I try so hard to get him interested in recognising letters nad the sounds of letters but so far he shows zilch interest. Will sit at a table with pens and paper for about 5 seconds! His motor skills hovever are fab, running, jumping, hopping, football, scooters, bikes he loves them.

Also knows the make of about 12 different cars and can swing a golf club pretty well!

julen · 21/11/2005 21:20

Dd is 3 1/2, and she walks, talks, throws tantrums like nobody's business, cuddles her little brother 'till he is red in the face, and makes him and herself laugh 'till they are both red in the face. She can eat as if she hasn't had anything for weeks, she can run and play and hop around with more dedication than I ever imagined possible, and sleep the deepest of sleeps.
She can also make all her grown-up relatives go completely mushy when she tells them 'I love you'.
Great age, 3.. (although she regularly can make me feel like hitting a wall..!)

northerner · 21/11/2005 21:21

Julen that is a lovely post. Totally sums up 3 year olds.

trace2 · 21/11/2005 21:29

julen thats just what i wanted to here, no matter what they can or car'nt do, i am sure they make us all feel special, when they tell us

MUMMY I LOVE YOU and give us a big cuddle and it makes it all worthwhile.

DD is just three. I only have ds to compare her with and she is far more advanced than he was at the same age.

She knows her numbers up to 20 and can recognise her own name - she has also started to try and write it (it's only 4 letters). She astounded me on sunday by drawing a person with a head, body, legs and arms.

She speaks really well but has an older brother so learns from him. Her favourite word at the moment is 'actually', used for emphasis when correcting something she sees as wrong. She is a real chatterbox.

Her play is a lot more sophisticated than her brothers was at 3 - she plays on her own very happily for quite long periods (30 mins ish) and sets up little stories using dolls and teddies.

She can get herself dressed and undressed most of the time, go to the loo on her own and almost put her shoes on herself too. She is fiercly independent but also the sweetest cuddliest little thing ever.

My dd is 3 years and 4 months
she recognises the full alphabet (as both phonic sounds and the letters) can count and recognise upto 20, recognises majority of colours and knows that by mixing certain colours you get a different one, can write her name, can draw simple shapes (Circles, ovals squares etc) plus a few of the not so simple ones (Stars, triangles etc) can read small words, very large vocab, knows her phone number, loves sticking and gluing stuff, stands on one leg, eats with a knife and fork,

But she cant dress herself, put her coat on, climb,

She is more advanced in the schooly side of things and not very good at the physical side of things IYKWIM

She did go to play group from being 2 and started full time school (nursery class) at 3 years 2 months and has come on leaps and bounds

All kids learn at different rates one of her friends is 4 months younger yet has a better vocab and one is 5 months older and has less of a vocab.

piffle · 23/11/2005 21:22

3 y 1m
counts up to 49 - reading numbers hmmm maybe up to 10 she is confident with but not any further.

mimics anything (has speech delay but is rapidly making up for it)
fave phrase now is "nice and warm" or "brass monkeys mummy"
she knows a lot of letters indidivdually about 3/4 of the alphabet she can name.
She know sher own name, she picked it out from the Emmy awards poster, her name is Emmy LOL surprised me - she also knows her brothers name
Her manners are amazing

karen23 · 23/11/2005 21:57

lol at piffles dd with "brass monkeys"

It's crazy what kids like saying my dd keeps saying "bovered" (Like that tate woman) and answers everything with "because" or "Cos" and she told me to "funk off you silly punk" after her first day of school luckily she only said it once

That school has alot to answer for

dexter · 24/11/2005 10:21

My son is three and three months. His conversation is probably better than some, he's very clear and talks in long sentences. More a curse than a blessing at times, SCENE: 3 yr old boy hops down from table, leaving dinner untouched: ME: "Oh, are you waiting for it to get cooler?" 3 YR OLD: "No, I'm waiting for it to get gooder". sigh.
He can throw, and catch a ball, kick a ball, climb, jump, hop, run at a real fast pace, stand on one leg, bow (like a ballet dancer!!!)He can count to 5 but not reliably further, recognise letters A, C, G, H, J, L, M, N, O, P, S. He can recognise his name, mummy, daddy, nanny, granny and reliably read these even after not seeing them for a day or two. He can use a mouse to click, selct and drag objects, and use the arrow keys on a keyboard. He uses his imagination all the time and plays self-generated games for prob. 80% of a day.
He can't draw - holds a pen with a 'fist' grip and scribbles, though he can just about do a circle if prompted. Can't write anything approaching a letter. He certainly can't do up knots, and doesn't find threading beads or buttons easy at all, gives up! Doesn't get himself dressed because he is a little naturist and just has no interest in wearing clothes.
I guess it's ALL down to what they're interested in really - if it interests them, they do it!

Hulababy · 24/11/2005 10:31

DD has a terrible habit of using the "yeah, but, yeah, no, but" phrase - very Vicky Pollard
