Best private schools in South Wales??

SequinnedDragonfly · 30/05/2011 15:42

We're relocating from London to South Wales. Children (2DD 2DS) are currently in private school, so we'd like to keep it that way. Don't mind boys and girls in different schools, as long as they're quite near to each other. DD1 is senior school in September, others junior school. Any parents with children in private schools in South Wales I would be very thankful for your opinions. Thank You!

The only one I know is Monmouth School which has a good reputation from what I have heard. Perhaps not far enough south for you?

Good luck with your move.

Can you narrow down the area? Cardiff has Howells (GDST girls), Llandaff Cathedral an St John's. Have friends that use al these schools and are happy enough. There are the Haberdashers' school in Monmouth, Rougemont in Newport (not heard good things about) and St michael's in Llanelli (quite strong academically). Going further into mid-Wales there's Christ's in Brecon and Llandovery College (cousns a both, all fine). All the school take from wide areas.

Chris College, Brecon has just had a super Estyn report, but Brecon may be too far out, more mid wales.

Have you any idea what part of South Wales you are looking to live? We have friends with a daughter starting in Malvern this september (to add another in to the equation) and we also have friends with children in Westbourne school in Penarth, and i know our friends with thier children in St Johns are thrilled! Its a very good school.

I know may boys in Cathedral school, have sisters in the all girls school Howells, so if you preferred that option, both schools are very local, but Cathedral school does have girls too.

Porthcawl has St Clares and St Johns (but the latter is very small)

we too have heard Rougemont is having a blip, which is a shame, as it was excellent, so unsure what is happening there.

Youbhave Howells and the cathedral school in Cardiff. The heberdashers in Monmouth.
Friends of mine have children in Rougemont, they are happy with it, has never had that good a reputation as non selective.

We have friends in both Howells and cathedral school and the children are very happy.None of the schools in Cardiff are selective. St johns is a lovely small school and is very good in music. Being a Catholic school, you pay fees for only three children if you send all your four children there( better check this, this is what I have heard)
All the schools do very well academically.

OP, whereabouts in South Wales ideally?

HHPorthcawl · 07/06/2011 11:17

It depends where you're moving to OP - there are good independent schools right the way across from Monmouthshire to Llanelli; all of them seem to have good academic results so it really depends on what each offers pastorally, and what extra-curricular activities they offer. I work at St Clare's in Porthcawl (nr Bridgend) and we take boys and girls from Nursery upwards.

I think just about every independent school in Wales has been mentioned here so lots to go looking for! I think the best advice I can give as someone who looked for a private school from scratch is see/talk to as many as you can. You never know what's going to be a fit for your needs until you do your own 1st hand research.

There are free 3rd party sites which review/compare the schools such as here - www.educators.co.uk/wales/ so that might be a good starting point to get a "feel" for what works for you.

Other than that the opinions above are also a fantastic reference point, just keep in mind that what might be perfect for their DD might not be for yours Smile.

Children are currently in private school [in London, which we all know is a whole different kettle of educational fish to the rest of the UK], so we'd like to keep it that way [in Wales].

Not getting your logic there.Confused

senua · 24/11/2017 10:42
