Does anybody know what sort of maths and English will children be expected to know at the end of year 5?

Depends on the school and if private or state to an extent. dd is Year 5 (private, top set) has done some work on angles (measuring, identifying as acute, obtuse or reflex and calculating one where others are know in a shape or on a line), time (such as using a timetable to work out how long a journey is and which bus to take to arrive in time), interpreting graphs, multiplying by decimals and long division, converting fractions to decimals including improper fractions. BBC Bitesize has some ks2 actviities which would show you the methods. In English she has written a story of 40mins +, learnt fairly complicated spellings, and comprehension.

And my yr 5's ( bog standard state) have done the same!

Thanks for the website suggestion. I let him start on KS1, and he completed that without any errors. I am trying to work out what stage he would, or should be at in the uk now. He is finishing year 3 in Norway now, as kids here start school when they are 6. He started on the KS2 exercises, I can see they are trickier than what he is used to, but he has a good head for maths, and is working his way through. But it is bed time now.

It is really good.

He will have to sit an assessment before entry into a school in the area we are considering moving to. And they say based on his age, he will start in year 6. Sounds to me that he will have "lost" 2 years of school by moving here, as the teachers have been keeping him back rather than let him keep his own speed.

Dd1 (state school, top maths group) has just started algebra. This year she's done addition/subtraction fractions, area/perimeter of rectangles and triangles, percentages, long multiplication/division including decimals. She's also done some angle work including angles in a triangle etc.
English (not setted) they do comprehension, essay/report writing short (20 mins) and long (40 mins). Spellings (various, don't usually go through them with her any more) and she's currently reading "The Hobbit" as her reading book. Actually she's not enjoying it much, she enjoyed "Watership Down" more.

Haha spanieleyes!!

I dont think my son would enjoy the hobbit much. He loves Roald dahl books though (in English), and he spells ok. But obviously, having been here for 3 years, I expect he will be behind in English, even if we speak English at home, and he watches English movies and read books

My DS was born May 2002, he is YR4.

LIZS · 23/05/2011 20:19

lol spanieleyes - dc school doesn't follow nc/SATS so never sure how it correlates ! dd is one of youngest Yr 5 - August 2001 - so no Quint, he'd be the year below.
