My 15 year old son is taking his D of E bronze award and in a couple of weeks he's doing a trek in Derbyshire. Anyone got any suggestions on food and thing he needs to pack i dont have a cule he can take? Must be light to carry, easy to cook and nothing that'll give him delhi belly if not cooked properly (That's a mumsy thing!!) Thought of the usual things like heinz sausage n beans, pasta etc but this boy eats for England normally, so with all this exercise he'll need plenty of filling food.(Which he has to carry) for food but i dont know what bi have to pack all together thanks

theres a list on the D of E website (i think)

DD took pasta, pasta sauce, bread rolls, quorn sausages, biscuits, cereal bars and for emergency fod a (non-cooked) jelly.

Those dried pasta with sauce things or rice meals are quite good. I think they're made by Batchelors. Presumably he's going as part of a group so they should work out what they want to cook together rather than have to do 4 or 5 separate meals. Cereal bars, Dextro or Lucozade energy tablets, Kendal Mint Cake were things recommended as snacks IIRC.

Kit List on the website should help.

THey'll have access to water at the campsites so for evening meals and breakfast go for lightweight stuff that can be reconstituted with water. No point carrying any more weight than is necessary.

lilholeis1234 · 10/05/2011 14:31

thank you

er - I think one of the points of the exercise is that they work all this stuff out for themselves.............!

meditrina · 10/05/2011 14:33

If he'll eat them, and if you can bear to do it, then Pot Noodles are the answer. Plus Mars Bars.

muddyangels123 · 10/05/2011 14:37

My son is also doing his DofE Bronze. He's 14.
My DS2 is doing it through Cadets. He's taking RAT packs with him.
I think you can also buy them from some outdoor shops.

seeker · 10/05/2011 14:38

Seriousy, you mustn't shop or pack or plan for him! He's 15 - what's the point of doing it if you do it for him?

muddyangels123 · 10/05/2011 14:41

Because she's his mum and worries about him.Wink

seeker · 10/05/2011 14:45

Obviously.

But honestly - it's a single overnight camp well supervised. If he gets it wrong he won;t come to any harm - and he will ahev got it wrong himself. Much better than getting it right because Mummy did it for him!

sowhatshallido · 10/05/2011 14:46

dd found maltloaf to be good - pretty filling too

muddyangels123 · 10/05/2011 14:50

Sweets (barley sugar,mints,etc..) are great for taking you mind off the long trek.
Dried electrolites (sp) are good for adding to water(bottle) to make it taste better. sport shops have it.
Add a couple of brown/tom. sauce packets to add to food. It makes it taste better.
My son goes on lots of camps/treks with cadets.Grin

seeker · 10/05/2011 14:51

Aggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!

muddyangels123 · 10/05/2011 14:54

well, if i let my son sort himself out, he would forget everything.Wink
The week long camp DS2 has just been on his bergen was bigger than him.Smile100L pack.

ChishAndFips · 10/05/2011 14:56

They should be planning meals as a group, can he suggest to the rest of them they do this? My DDs had things like pasta with packet sauces and veggies, tinned curry (heavy so need to decant into plastic tubs first) with boil-in-bag rice, instant hot chocolate, Kendal Mint Cake, plenty of sweets to snack on as they walk along. Cake always a winner - DDs often took those golden syrup and jamaica ginger ones as (I am told) they still taste just as good when squashed flat as a pancake!

Tip for making the rucksack lighter: he packs everything he thinks he needs, then unpacks and asks himself 'Am I actually going to use this?' about everything. And no need to take a plate, biggish bowl is suitable for everything.

Please don't pack for him though! Do help and suggest things but he has to actually do it, that is a major point of doing D of E. Also makes it easier at night in a dark tent if he knows where everything is first hand.

ChishAndFips · 10/05/2011 14:57

Sorry that is a bit epic, didn't realise I'd warbled on for that long Blush.

seeker · 10/05/2011 14:57

"well, if i let my son sort himself out, he would forget everything." And?

muddyangels123 · 10/05/2011 14:58

Yes, i know seeker, there comes a time when you have to let them get on with it.
By the time he's doing gold i hope he can pack himself.
The funny thing is my DD packs her brownie bag for camp/pack holiday. She's 9. She does a good job aswell.Smile

muddyangels123 · 10/05/2011 15:02

well, that's a challenge then. When DS2 goes on june camp i will get him to pack with no help.
We will see how it goes.
i will report back after the event.

seeker · 10/05/2011 15:05

"Yes, i know seeker, there comes a time when you have to let them get on with it.
By the time he's doing gold i hope he can pack himself."

He won't if you keep doing it for him!

What's the worst that can happen?

GrungeBlobPrimpants · 10/05/2011 15:08

Blimey!!! What seeker said - my dd is doing her bronze exped shortly and whole point is them working it all out themselves.

she's hopelessly impractical sometimes so this will be good learning experience for her too. Her school all do a practice expedit first to troubleshoot/pick up stuff like this

muddyangels123 · 10/05/2011 15:13

I know, i know ( hides under cushion), my Oh says the same.
DS2s friend at camp forgot to pack socks and was borrowing DS all week.
He does pack his bergen, but i make sure everything is in a pile at hand.Blush

seeker · 10/05/2011 15:16

well DON"T!!!!!!!

What's the worst that can happen? Bronze is only one night - if he forgets his food he's not going to die of starvation in 14 hours!

seeker · 10/05/2011 15:17

sorry - 24 hours
