Disappointing Year 7

DD was offered a place at what used to be a very good girls secondary school cofe last year. We have been very disappointed with a number of issues: poor behaviour, bullying, poor communication, ignored letters, overall a somewhat slipshod approach and an overall lack of excellence which was once the hallmark of the school. The latest is that having checked dd's exercise books the following subjects are have not been marked for two to three months: Spanish, RE, D&T, Geography, Science. I am very unimpressed with the head and the chair and vice chair. Should I make a complaint about the marking, put myself forward as a governor or simply keep below the parapet at this stage and start making arrangements to transfer DD to the independent sector next Autumn. DD has had a bit of a rocky ride but appears to be doing OK in all subjects (not that I have much confidence in the standard of assessment or teaching) and has a good friendship group although there are some spectacularly badly behaved girls, or should I just forge ahead with arrangements to transfer her. DD is in two minds about what she wants to do.

Why not do all of those things.

I would certainly be making complaints about behaviour and the lack of marking. If one draws these things specifically to the head's attention they are (usually) forced to do something.

Howver, I would also be looking elsewhere at the same time. If thisngs are resolved whilst you look, then all to the good, if not then nothing lost.

I agree - do complain ,but it will take time for things to improve and your DD only has one shot at education ,so I think a move ( if poss ) would be the way to go .

I can't see all your concerns being addressed by the school - there are lots, and some are not going to change easily (eg the head). Also poor behaviour alone would get me looking at other schools.
