Dear all,

Can anyone recommend any boys only pre-preps (or prep schools with a pre-prep department) that are commutable to the Guildford/Woking area? Lanesborough looks nice - any feedback? Any other schools worth considering e.g. Parkside?

Many thanks for any advice!

I don't have any sons, but I do know quite a few people with boys at Lanesborough, and the consensus seems to be that it's a very good but very academic school - it does feed into the Royal Grammar School, which is also very academic. I can't even think of any other all-boys schools in the area, off hand. Does it have to be all boy? Hoe Bridge in Woking is mixed but originally a boys' school, and has a good reputation, for example?

Thanks Alice. Would prefer all boy but would consider mixed if good....

It doesn't feed rgs anymore.

Some boys go there but entry to rgs has no preference for lanes borough any more.

It is pretty cliquy tbh.

Cranmore is quite good

Gosh I'm sorry. That sounded really argumentative -I didn't mean it like that.

There used to be a perception that lanesborough was a feeder school and their boys were assisted /supported by rgs re entry.
In recent years the large number of lanes borough boys led to their being a bit too ......clannish iyswim.
RGS decdued to ensure that no preference was given to any boys and entry in over last four/five years has become much much wider.

Sorry for sounding picky

I'm sure you're right, Pagwatch - I just meant that lots of parents consider RGS when choosing Lanesborough, as far as I know, and that Lanesborough has often been described to me as quite academic. Hoe Bridge is generally well thought of and is mixed but with more boys than girls. I know a lot of people with sons there who are very happy with it. St Andrew's, also in Woking, is another boy-skewed mixed prep, but I know several people who have taken sons out of there because of bullying or lack of support for special needs issues (Asperger's, mostly), although it seems to be fine for many others. As I said, I don't have any sons, though, so it's all hearsay!

My brother was at Lanesborough, and my aunt taught there.

It's a lovely school, not only academic but very musical too. However, provision for SNs is not especially strong. I wouldn't recommend it for any boy with dyslexia, ASD or ADHD type issues.

I think Lanesborough deals with SN as well as any normal prep school, however there are better schools for SN around. It has also changed a lot recently, and has a female head I think.
It does feed into a number of other senior schools (including a dribble to State), and boys leave at both 11 and 13.

Thank you all - all very helpful.
