Any one got any opinions/insider info on this school?

We are considering it for 6th form.

TIA

Friends of mine send their kids there for 6th - as the State Comps all kick out at 16. Some love it, some hate it. Academically it cannot be faulted but it is very narrowly academic - perfect for future medics!
Will be interesting to see what happens now that the state schools are starting to get their own 6th forms ....

Ah that's interesting - thanks for that.
We aren't in Southampton itself but our local schools are very poor on the science/technical.
My dc wants to study engineering so wants to do Maths/Physics/Further Maths/D&T 'A' levels, but our local schools literally have 1-2 students taking Further Maths and D&T.
So it may well work for a school to give my dc more students in their classes.

The other option is of course Peter Symonds in Winchester, Barton Peverill in Eastleigh or Brockenhurst College in (quel surprise) Brockenhurst.
Friends' kids from all three have gone to Oxbridge, Russell Group, med school etc.
Southern Hampshire is ridiculously well endowed with good free education.
Leaves us free to buy horses and holidays!

peter s in wnchester was rated 3rd in country acc to local legend - ds at bp which is also v good.imo no real need for private 6th form - check their stats.

TalkinPeace2 · 22/04/2011 18:26

PS seems a bit lower than 3rd nationally - its hard to pick out the 6th form colleges
but if you look here:
www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-12168129
its results compare favourably with many grammars and independents
which is pretty amazing as it is a comp with over 3000 students

scaryteacher · 22/04/2011 21:23

PSC is not a comp, it's a sixth form.

TalkinPeace2 · 22/04/2011 21:47

Scary - indeed its 6th form but like all the others around here it is non selective therefore comp. I know kids who are utterly non academic thriving there.

goinggetstough · 23/04/2011 08:18

Non selective Peter Symonds? For A level courses you have to have 5 GCSEs A* - C and for a number of courses you have to have a B in it. Plus you are interviewed so they certainly choose who attends, so they do select to a certain extent.

scaryteacher · 25/04/2011 11:43

If you didn't get the O level grades you couldn't go there in the 80s when I went to PSC; I want ds to go there, and you have to get the grades at GCSE otherwise you are not considered. I have been there, talked to the admissions staff and start the procedure in July.

My non-academic nephew is there at the moment, and hates it, he can't leave soon enough, so not all non academic thrive.
