Optional Sats

Does my yr 4 child have to do optional sats, the year teacher will assess their ability at the end of the school year. I already know that they are being set regular tests each week. I do not have a problem with the statutory sats at the end of yrs 2 and 6. I just think there seems to be a lot of testing and not enough teaching. What are my rights as a parent.

None, I would think. Or rather, about as many as telling your child's school that you don't wish them to do maths each day (assessment for learning is part-and-parcel of every lesson). Optional SATs are just a small part of the tools teachers use to assess children. You can't pick and choose which parts of that process you will allow your child to participate in.

Agree with clam re her description of optional SATs. The weekly testing sounds a bit much though, and a few teachers do seem over-fond of regular tests. You could have a moan about this aspect of the teaching, but I don't think you would get very far, I'm afraid.
