How to help DD with her spellings (Y2)

Just had dd's parents evening and spelling was flagged as being an issue. Are there any websites which help with spellings?
She has 10 spellings to learn each week and normally gets 9 or 10 out of 10.
It's more of an issue with her writing. I think she forgets how to spell 'common' words like: 'wonce' instead of 'once' and 'lick' instead of 'like'. Apart from encouraging her to write stories at home (which she doesn't do at the moment), do you have any advice? Her reading is above average for her age although by no means exceptional at her school. She reads the Faraway tree series so that you know her level.
I just want to know how I can help her really.
Any advice would be great!

We have this problem with my dd who is 9. She gets full marks every week for her spelling (usually about 25 or more words) but her spelling in her writing is dreadful and can include words she has had in her spelling list.
My dd is also an intelligent wee thing so it is bizarre. I will watch with interest. Grin

Same thing here with Y2 DS. He does well on his weekly spellings but it doesn't translate into his written work. And he hates writing so there is no way I am "forcing" him to do more!!

TBH I didn't think spelling was a big issue at this age. I personally think they have so much to worry about when they are doing writing (DS has to focus on handwriting, using full stops and capital letters, using adjectives and adverbs, varying the sentence structure etc) that I am not surprised that spelling goes out the window!! I am hoping that when some of the "other" things become more second nature that his spelling might improve.

follygirl - what about some dictation? sounds very old fashioned, but at least they are seeing words then in the context of sentences (and it's easier than writing stories).

You could try this website with her?

look cover

You put your own spellings in the white boxes and then click on GO. DD is also in Yr2 and enjoys doing hers like this

Thanks for the replies.

I do ask her to use her spellings in context and I always make sure she understands what they mean.

They can be quite unusual words though: illegal, irregular, debt...words that a 6 year old wouldn't normally use in her written work.

She is at a very academic school so it doesn't help that a lot of the girls are geniuses. What is 'average' at that school does not translate into what is 'average' at another school.

We didn't really warm to her teacher last night, she was a bit dismissive. Luckily we won't be having this teacher much longer and the other teachers are more nurturing in general. She loves her school and has lots of friends so I do think she is at the right school for her.

I will try the website SunshineOnARainyDay, thanks for the tip.
