DD has started bringing home wolf hill books. Level 2 and 3 I think. Wondering whether they are age appropriate for a 6 year old as website seems to suggest they are aimed at older struggling reader's. 4 year old would also have a bash at them given the chance. So far content seems ok but wondering wghat others think.

Yes, OUP's Wolf Hill books are a whole language book series designed for 7+ yr.old reluctant/'less-able' readers. I suggest you ask her teacher to provide appropriate decodable books, as now required by the DfE -see below:

In Oct 2010 the DfE introduced a revised set of criteria for synthetic phonics programmes. It includes new advice on early texts to practise reading: '(E)nsure that as pupils move through the early stages of acquiring phonics, they are invited to practise by reading texts which are entirely decodable for them, so that they experience success and learn to rely on phonemic strategies. It is important that texts are of the appropriate level for children to apply and practise the phonic knowledge and skills that they have learnt. Children should not be expected to use strategies such as whole-word recognition and/or cues from context, grammar, or pictures.'

dd gets to choose her own books so I can make some suggestions. She has brought home treetops before. Not sure what other schemes are available. My worry is that younger dc is on level that wolf hill level 1's start.

Have a look at this page -it's brief descriptions of recommended decodable book schemes (scroll down) -plus info. on why it's very important to use decodable books with beginning readers.
