Lanesborough / Shrewsbury Lodge

Hi - I'm hoping someone might be able to give me some help and advice. Recently My DS had an informal assesment for a place at Lanesborough (we had to wait awhile for the results). In the meantime we also looked at Shrewsbury Lodge in Esher and signed him up as there was only one place left and we didn't want him to miss out. I really like SL, it's the feeder for Shrewsbury House but it does only take them up to the age of 7 however we've just had an acceptance back from Lanesborough. My husband is really keen on him to go to this school as it will take him through to age 11/13, we live in Cobham so the location for Shrewsbury is better. Can anyone let me know their thoughts/experience on Lanesborough or indeed either school, I've heard Lanesborough is very cliquey? and driving in Guildford in the morning is horrendous?

I would think that Shrewsbury or another of the local schools in Cobham will allow your DS to have more local friends. Lanesborough catchment area has shrunk they told us and many boys live in Guildford or the very local villges - maybe voice your concerns to the Lanesborough. My DS hopefully joining next September.

Hi Fiddledee, thanks, interesting about the catchment comment, that wasn't mentioned to us at all and I hadn't really given any thought to local friends to be honest so good point. I did a dummy school run this morning from Cobham and to be honest the drive was OK, better than expected apart from the journey back again. I think however we will have to consider moving to Guildford, hopefully all goes well with your DS next September.

I don't find Lanesborough cliquey, and I don't have boys there. Guildford has horrendous traffic, but only after 8 am and if you have to go past the High School. I can do a journey past the High School at 7:55 in 5 min, at 8:05 the same journey takes 15 min, but if you take the roundabout route close to Tormead/Lanesborough it is probably better. Although very busy dropping off there. (But if he became a chorister you'd do 8 am drop offs and miss the chaos.)

Thanks mummytime, reassuring to hear about them not being 'cliquey' - it was something I had read from a past thread, I also didn't know about the early drop off for choristers - if fact they haven't given me any info on the subject yet, I will call them later this week to find out more. The next step I suppose is where to buy a house, my husband was talking about the other side of Guildford towards Shalford?, I was more keen around the Merrow area or closer, depends on whats out there and the budget!

I'd go for Merrow for much easier transport (although do beware prices are increased as it is George Abbot catchment). Of course if you looked at Warren Road, or off Epsom Road, he could walk to school.

Choristers btw are usually about 7 ish, and it is a big commitment, but it depends on the boy.

I went to see SL as an option for my 3 boys. I really liked the head - Knew all the children and the school had a really friendly atmosphere - asked to see some work and was impressed by the high standard. Facilities were amazing and my boys loved the fish tank! Hope to send all 3.

A happy SL parent here. Slightly perturbed to see such negative comments about what's considered by many as one of the best schools in the area, with a recent outstanding OFSTED, and a huge waiting list for next year's reception year. If it, and indeed the Head was that bad surely the parents would vote with their feet, no?

Go along and judge for yourself, give Mrs Hope a chance. She knows every child, and understands how they tick. Yes, she may not be able to tell every parent with real conviction which future school will suit their 4 year old child in 2 years times, but her actions are dictated by Shrewsbury House's guaranteed place scheme. As you go through year 1 she is far better placed to make an informed recommendation and indeed does so.

Fiona - I'm glad you (and your sons!) loved the school, and if you're after a well balanced educational experience, and not high octane academics then SL is a great school. I have no doubt that my son will be able to get into any of the schools we select for him, and he is being well-prepared for success, and in the meantime he's enjoying some great facilities and activities all wrapped up in a nurturing environment.

Every school isn't for every family, or child, and when you're lucky enough to be able to choose where to educate your child, maybe that choice should be exercised.

Muni - it's sad to see you're clearly not happy for some reason. Yes the school is erecting a classroom/pavilion at the field, and as at every single other private school they ask the parents if they would like to make a voluntary donation. There is no obligation at all, and many, many parents feel that there fees are sufficient and they do not wish to give the school anymore money, but there are also a lot of parents that would like to make a small donation.

Your other point about getting to know the Parent's better could be considered a bit of a red herring. How could she possibly know you were unhappy without you letting her know. She is always easy to approach in my experience, and over the years I have had a number of meetings with her and have NEVER had any issues with arranging these.

Mrs Hope is a very good pre-prep Head, and she knows the children and for me that's the over-riding requirement. Yes, she may come across as a little "rigid" at times, but she is a deeply experienced teacher of young children and what more do you want?

thegamebird · 29/02/2012 16:44

... Just noticed terrible grammar .... (!!!) ... Many Parent's feel that THEIR fees are sufficient...

Mrs Hope would NOT be happy! Wink
