What do your chn do at playtime?

Cos I thought it should be time to chill out with your mates, eat an apple, have a drink, use the loo, chase your friends, play football, skipping, climbing frame etc, but have just been to look round what will probably be ds's school when he starts in September and they were doing something called "huff 'n'puff" which is basically pe in playtime! One class were doing aerobics/dance in the hall (so not even outside) One were doing "follow the leader" with a teaching assistant, then there were ball skills, rope skills etc etc.I'm convinced they do this cos the school is 4 form entry but the playground is not huge so they probably are trying to keep a bit of order/structure. Apparently the chn do this for 4 out of 10 playtimes. Is this normal? When do they get their down time? There is no way I would want to be "organised" in this way after being told what to do all morning. What do you think? Is it weird? I've worked supply in plenty of primary schools and never come across such a high level of compulsory organisation before. I'm rethinking my school choice now.

Wow, I've never heard of that either.

Our school is 4 form entry too and they just run around letting off steam at playtime as far as I can see. I think that's good, they can make their own games, form friendships etc.

At wet play today though DD informs me that they had singing in the hall and she was thrilled to have learnt all the words and actions to:

"When I was one, I'd just begun
The day I went to sea
I climbed aboard a pirate ship
and the captain said to me

We're going this way, that way,
forward, backwards,
over the Irish Sea
A bottle of rum to fill my tum
And that's the life for me".

Took me right back to when I was a nipper!

hmm i think it's a good idea... it's probably the only exercise some of them get!

Wish they had that at ds's school. He has just started in Reception and all hell breaks loose at lunch time. He has fallen several times and had 2 different boys run and knock into his head. There has also been a degree of bullying going on. I cannot understand why there is nothing organised to keep them out of trouble.

Ds loves it though and probably wouldn't have it any other way.
