Please because I am having kittens here.
My first choice school is ranked as 400 ish, the other local school is 200 ish, my initial reaction was fuckkkk and made an appointment to see the head of school 200 for tomorrow, DH thinks I'm being a twit and the other school is just as good based on the candidates, the points etc.
Should I go and look at the other school ?
Today it is not too late, Wednesday I suspect it is.

It depends on your child and your point of view. To some a higher ranking school would give better teaching, to another it might mean they are more likely to be out on their ear if they don't hit every target.

There is no harm in looking at any school that might be an option though.

How do you know these things before you get there though ?
I will go and look but none of the 4 we looked around said yes we are crap and our exam results speak for themselves (even though some of them do).

Mama - also have you checked the actual level of results (rather than league table position) - it's often a relatively small difference.

My advice - go with the school that's seems best for your dc. The league table is only part of the picture.

MarionCole · 28/02/2011 22:01

I think this is just A level results too, isn't it?

Stop having kittens! Agree with your hubby here.

If you read the article it says that there are about 3000 secondary schools in England and the FT have picked the top 1000. If your schools are between 200th and 400th you are dealing the top 10% of secondary schools in England - that's good!

Look at the bigger picture, and stay calm ;)

I am not sure what the core subjects that the FT rank on. We are considering two schools for dd1, one is private and ranked in the 400's. The other (state) school does not rank at all because it has no sixth form.

The private school is very arty (so is dd1), and I cannot see if art is considered to be a core subject or not. The comprehensive gets good GCSE results (but I do not know if she has got in there until this evening).

It's too late to change your mind now if the schools are state schools anyway. The difference between 400's and 200's is not going to be that much, both schools will be wonderful.

GrimmaTheNome · 01/03/2011 12:59

What sort of schools are they?

How do their GCSE/EBacc scores compare?

Acanthus · 01/03/2011 13:01

Look at the actual A level results on the schools' websites and make up your own mind.

mamatomany · 01/03/2011 13:38

It's not too late until the 1st September around here, hence why i want to get this right but i've cancelled the meeting as the gap between the actual results is small and she may not even stay on until 6th form there anyway which i'd forgotten about Blush

Look at the leavers university destinations as well as the A level results.

This is half the trouble Sue the girl that showed us around the school i currently have as first choice was a 6th former heading for St Martins, DD was captivated but i'm slightly concerned it's a little early at 10.5 years to be making those decisions, i'm happy to support her whatever she does but i'd like her to have as many opportunities available to her as possible.
I think i shall go back to private for 6th form anyway though unless she does amazingly well at GCSE.

Mama I made the same choice about 6th form. I hope things go well for your DD.
