Need some advice regarding independent secondary schools in this area. DD10 goes to a very small non selective independent school which has excellent results. If given a choice we will not move her but due to certain unavoidable circumstances might have to.Thanks in advance.

the queens school in chester is the best one around that area but i think its a secondary school.

Hi Zeus. I can confirm that Queens does have a Lower School, it takes girls from 4 and my DD goes there. Lower and upper school sites are separate but both roughly in the city centre. Pupils come into the school from all over Cheshire, North Wales & the Wirral though.

Their website is here

I'm in danger of sounding overly gushy here but I couldn't recommend the school highly enough - fantastic facilities, teachers and ethos. The Times parent Power Survey recently measured it as the best prep in the North West & 14th out of the top 100 nationally.

We also consider it a huge advantage that once a girl is accepted in the Lower School, she will be guaranteed a place for the Upper School - no further entrance exams and all that stress at age 10/11.

Has that answered your immediate questions? Would you like to know anything else about the school or living round here?

Moreton Hall in Oswestry is supposed to be very good, it is co-ed upto 10/11 then is a girls senior school. Bit far south for Chester but good for Wrexham.

The Queens school is the best around for Chester.

Or, if you prefer a coed, Kings School Chester.

I looked around Moreton Hall, old fashioned and lovely but worried the DC's would make a break for the big city at the earliest opportunity though.
Loved Kings, modern facilities, Queens looks tatty and tbh nothing special at all but yet they seem to get the results.
My DC's go to a completely different school and I know somebody who moved from ours to go back to Queens because they loved it so much.

Hi all, sorry to nosy in on this conversation but thought i might ask a few questions and would be very grateful if you could help.
We too are looking at Kings & Queens for our DD's.
I guessed as much as mamatomany said about modern facilities in one school but results in the other.

Do you know if the entrance exam is strictly adhered to?
We have a super bright DD & a slightly above average but lazy one?
we are currently overseas and our school system is very different?
Could anyone recommend any nice areas for both schools to live in? Looking at Rossett but thought any of you nice mums might have some ideas, within a 25 min max of schools.
Thank you all!~

Hi I have a girl at King's and a boy who has just left and I couldn't recommend in highly enough. It has fab facilities and gets excellent results. i'm not sure what you mean about results in the other- King's get fab results just as good as Queens and they have got a much better record of Oxbridge entry! I live in Rossett and it is so easy to get to King's-the local bus goes every 10 minutes and stops outside the school. There are so many king's pupils on there it is like a school bus! Rossett is lovely- the benefit of country and 2 nice pubs but still only a few miles from Chester for shopping!

TheFlyingOnion · 22/05/2011 10:44

A lof of the King's/Queen's pupils live out Norley/Delamere way, and there's a school bus which caters for the villages round there. Otherwise Rossett/Pulford/Holt/Fardon are all lovely, or Malpas which is also near Wrexham. If you prefer nearer to the city then Curzon Park/Westminster Park/Queen's Park all nice.

I went to Queen's myself, and they definitely get the results. I left a few years ago now but I think King's is a more "rounded" education tbh. It could be difficult for girl's to integrate into Queen's if they are new starters, especially if not particularly academic or industrious. The results seemed much more the "be all and end all" and the environment a bit more hot-housey.

At King's its much more to do with sport and the rest of the curriculum.

At both the Heads seem to make a big difference in the school ethos and it might be worth taking this into account.

Of course, there is also Abbeygate (just outside Chester, not as academic but a more relaxed atmoshere), and the Hammond which specialises in dance and drama. Moreton Hall had a reputation of being really "posh" when I was at school!!

Thanks both, only just seen these. Both have been enrolled now at Queens, and are looking at a rental in Saughall, which will accept our pets, as not many do.
Am little concerned over DD 2 as not particularly academic but sharp as a tack. Will see how we go with it but thanks all....

Hi
Did you ever sort this out? If not you should take a look at Moreton Hall, it HAS to be one of the very best options in and around Chester and Wrexham!
