Hi, have you been to see his teacher?

Tere are 'alternative' schools, like Steiner Schools.

Have you even just looked at other local schools? My DC attended one local state school, but another Outstanding one just down the road is very very different, and would suit a totally different kind of child.

Talk to him and see what he hates, what if anything he likes. Then talk to school, but do also consider alternatives. Several friends have moved children to less "good" school sand been very happy.

Or, would home education be an option? Parents can choose whatever approach suits their child best, so your son need not sit at a table at all. My older daughter was quite interested in many "academic" subjects, but at seven she often preferred to talk about them while playing on a gymnastics bar or a space hopper.

In addition, your son could have whatever music or sporting opportunities you are able to seek out for him in the wider community. Without the demands of homework, fresh from a day usually spent playing with friends or relaxing at home, my daughter has time and energy for after-school activities. She's now eleven and at the moment she does six sports - none of them in any serious way, but she enjoys herself - and is in two choirs. For a schoolchild that would be a very hectic schedule, but removing school from the daily timetable frees up a great deal of time for other things. Organised group activities aren't the only way to go, of course: some kids may prefer to spend hours running around with friends, practicing tricks on a trampoline, skateboard or bicycle or experimenting on their own with a keyboard or recorder.
