Thinking of sending my daughter to Kumon, anyone tried it? My daughter is 5 next month and is in reception.

If you do a search on Mumsnet you will see lots and lots of feedback already. There has been discussed very recently.

Me personally, I think there are other options to try. Maths should be fun, entertaining and interesting. At 5, maths should be all about playing games, using equipment to ensure a child understands concepts.

From the various postings it seems that Kumon is all about filling in worksheets. This isnt an ideal start to developing childrens knowledge and strategies.

We tried it and didn't rate it at all. If you search my name ad kumon I have posted in detail as to why.

Do an internet search for playing maths games and there will be hundreds of different ideas you can do at home.

Counting the number of items in the shopping basket, how many items in one packet (meat or cakes)
Board games

The basics in reception/year 1 include number bonds to 10, (10+0) 1+9 2+8 3+7 7+3 etc
Knowing 1-10 then what comes after 9 what comes before 6 etc. Recognising the shape of the numbers and how to write them, correctly.

You can do all this at home incorporated into games. Use props, dolls, teddies, sweets, whatever interests your child. Get the teddy to do the counting - is teddy right or wrong.

Maths is fun fun fun, make sure she learns this right from the start.

Thanks for ideas, that's useful for the maths. Re Kumon though I was thinking of sending her for English subject. For reading and writing. Anyone tried them for that?
I will search the other threads as well thanks

If their approach to English is as tedious and mind numbingly boring as maths don't waste your time. Why do you think your daughter needs extra maths so early anyway?

I dont know if you like internet programmes, but Education City is good for teaching, especially for the younger ages.

You can do this at home, and incorporate the ideas off the games into your home life.
