Halloween Activity/Ideas Needed for a Reception Class

DD's school is always looking for ways to get parents involved. One of the ways parents participate is by coming into the classroom to talk about traditions from other cultures.

Somehow, I have been volunteered to do the presentation/activities for Halloween. I've been told by the teacher that I'll have an hour to fill. We can do anything from telling a scary story, to a crafts activity, to fun/games, etc - as long as it is vaguely educational and fun.

Anyone have any brilliant ideas? Are there websites that might be helpful? Suggestions are welcome and needed!

Depends on the age of the child really. THere's the dark dark wood story. Works better if you turn the lights off and get some torches for them. Take in some icing pens, some liquorice laces and some digestive biscuits and make some spiders for them to eat. Also if you are allowed, take in some face paints and paint their faces.

Thanks singyswife. Sorry I wasn't more clear about the age. This is a group of mainly 4 year olds, with some who are barely 5.

Here are some initial ideas:

  1. Black cat shapes for them to cut out, and maybe glue wiggly eyes, or do faces with silver paint pens.

  2. Orange pumpkin shapes to cut out, and then draw on eyes, nose and mouth with black pens.

  3. Bowls of covered food for them to put their hands in - for example: a bowl of cold spaghetti is witches hair, or a bowl of olives could be witches eyes. The idea would be that these are familiar items, but they can seem like something else with a bit of imagination.

  4. Plan to ask if there is a skeleton at the school so it can be in the room.

  5. Maybe get them to go "trick or treating" by visiting one of the other reception classrooms.

  6. Decorating orange frosted cupcakes with black licorice candies.

Other suggestions? Simply brainstorming here, and know this is far too much for only one hour. But, am hoping that the collective wisdom and experience here will give me some wonderful ideas.

Hi

I do the dark wood story with my two girls and they love it, might be a way of finishing the session. My friend also played a game of pin the wart on the witch which went down really well.

I don't know the darkwood story. Can you briefly tell it to me?
