Superhero homework

Ds3 (Year 5) has to write about a chosen Superhero and their enemy.

How would you define Superhero?

Ds is aware that most of his friends will go for Batman, Spiderman etc. However he would like to write about Jack from "Lost" who ds believes has been elevated to SH in the expectations of those on the Island.

Do you think that is too far off the wall.

I have asked ds to see teacher before writing anything as I am unsure if Jack would be an apt SH.

Thanks

ooh i am all for kids doing their own interpretations - it shows he is thinking about what it means.

i would encourage him and take it up with the teacher afterwards if s/he has a problem with it. but then i'm a new mum and probably a bit naive

WigWamBam · 12/10/2005 18:14

He's obviously thought really hard about the question, and he's showing great initiative to be trying to come up with an interesting alternative to what children usually think of as superheroes. I think such creative, independent thought should be encouraged as much as you can!

i would think its fine, the teach is prolly testing language skills - so it woudlnt matter if he wrote about topcat. i reckon that the teach was trying to make it interesting.

codface · 12/10/2005 19:05

thin its odd that a child of year 5 is watching lost
not at all suitable imo

compo · 12/10/2005 19:06

I think that's a brilliant idea. How old is Year 5 btw?

Tortington · 12/10/2005 19:09

its about 9 years old i think

maddiemo · 12/10/2005 19:13

He's ten. I can't see a problem with Lost at this age but each to their own.

Thanks for all the helpful comments.

Lost is on at 10pm for a start - that's telling you something isn't it?

Up to you of course but I don't think my 10 yr old would be watching it.

maddiemo · 12/10/2005 19:19

Er, actually its on at 6.30 pm when he is watching it.

I have not asked my parenting tv assessing skills to be jugded, as I have already said.

Issymum, I don't think it would matter whether Jack really is a superhero - what would matter was whether maddimo's ds could define what a superhero is typically seen as being, and whether he could make a reasoned argument that Jack could be seen as one.

Thanks Issymum. I think thats the problem he is having. Superhero characters seem quite one dimensional when analysed(which I suppose, as cartoon charcaters they are)

Yorkiegirl, thanks for the opinion of a year 5 teacher. Yes, I think he could put his case across well and he knows it will be a differnt perspective of Superhero.

I had a lecturer at uni who said that even if your argument was rubbish, he'd still give you a first if you presented it well and justified it. I think if he does both of these, he'll have done what she asked.
Wonder who he'll choose as jack's enemy though. The jungle, perhaps?

Gobbledispook · 12/10/2005 21:56

I'm really sorry Maddiemoo - I'm in a foul mood, had a shit day and I took it out on you. I'm really sorry - I know that wasn't your question.

I think your ds sounds pretty clever to 'think outside the box' and I'd say 'go for it'

laligo · 13/10/2005 11:13

sawyer is jack's enemy, in classic superhero style, IMO
sorry i know you didn't ask for opinions on Lost either!

maddiemo · 13/10/2005 11:21

Goobledispook Thanks for the apology, thats very kind. Sorry you had a crappy day yesterday.

Ds3 is actually sick and I can't see him being back at school before Monday, when the homework has to be in.

I think he will probably go with Lost and I will drop a note to teacher on Monday to explain.

At the moment ds3 is thinking of the Island and Jack's own conscience as the enemy, he hasn't mentioned Sawyer so thats a helpful suggestion laligo.

Let us know how the teacher responds!

Don't forget Ethan in the list of enemies!
