Not sure if it's too far away, but depending on your son's needs Angmering has a fantastic unit for physical disabilities. My first husband who had dmd attended there. They have lots of educational support and also facilities for physio and hydrotherapy etc. They are very much integrated into mainstream school though.
Angmering's just the other side of Litllehampton.

Fordwater school is in Chichester... many moons ago (I was in the 6th form) I spent an afternoon a week as a volunteer there.

Felpham, Middleton-on-Sea and North/South Bersted are all places that I have friends in. Bus travel is astronomically expensive. Is your son already in a school? It might be a good idea to contact the schools to find out which you prefer/can best meet his needs before you commit yourself to a particular location...

I thought you were talking about mainstream since you mentioned Felpham, that's why I said Angmering.
For special needs it's Fordwater for the profoundly disabled and St Anthony's, Chichester for those with lesser needs. Don't know much about Fordwater, but everyone I speak to about St Anthony's can't sing it's praises enough.

I wasn't aware our bus travel was more expensive than elsewhere, that's interesting.

I see now you may have mentioned Felpham as a housing location, not the school. Oops.

I'm basing my bus fares comment on London fares - we pay £1.30 (£2.20 if not on Oyster) to go anywhere across the network. There's a daily cap of £4 too so if using more than one bus to get from A to B (and back again), the maximum deducted from the Oyster is £4. Children under 11 are free on London buses too.

A number of people I've chatted to in the Witterings (whilst camping) and in Chichester when visiting parents have said that they always warn visitors to the area to take more cash than one would expect to need when catching buses because they are pricey. I know when I was visiting my parents with DD1 that it was cheaper to get a taxi to Bognor from Chichester for Dad, DD1 and me than it was to get a bus!
