Home tuition and smoking policy?

Bit of an odd question - DW works in an EBD school and sometimes has to do home tuition when the darling little kiddies cause so much havoc in school they have no other option.

Anyway - anyone else in a situation where the family won't leave the child (there are 2 staff present) and continue to smoke?

I'd assume Borough policy is no smoking in the workplace but then the workplace is someones private home.

Good question.

It would be worth checking what the SS policy is on this for the borough- although I'm fairly sure that your DP can't be compelled to put his health at risk, so would be within his rights to refuse to teach the session unless the smoking stopped.

Is he a teacher? It would also be worth asking the union for advice.

Also, check if the school has done a risk assessment for home working.

DW actually.....yes she is a teacher and this family makes Shameless look like perfectly well behaved people.

Thanks will get her to check it out further.

Sorry!

I am an EBD teacher too, so have been there.

Good luck.

She's done many other home tuition and was an actual home tutor for a while and then got a full time job in the EBD school - this particular 'family' seem to be about the worst she has come across - and a general fed upness of changes at the school are not helping...

I think that the rules for workplace smoking are that if you have colleagues or clients in your home then you can't smoke whilst working (that's the case for privately owned vehicles and I think the rules were the same). Wasn't there uproar when the laws were passed about people who run a business from home not being able to smoke in the privacy of their own home?

Obviously it's a bit peculiar when it's the "client" trying to smoke.

DW is seeing head about it today - she doesn't usually kick up a fuss and has a fair number of horror stories - you realsie howe some children just have very very poor backgrounds and it's not their fault.

I think the law is supposed to be the clients shouldnt smoke in the house for at least 2hrs before she comes round! But as to how enforcable that is ...

Lucky if they did 2mins before....left a young child with them yesterday with no adult supervision. DW wrote report to head / ed pysche and won't be going back until it get's sorted.
