Private school holidays

What are the usual school holidays please? I know they usually get 8 weeks in the summer, is that a week either side of state schools or do they break up 2 weeks earlier? Plus are any of the other holidays longer?

Thanks.

ds1 has 2 weeks for autumn half term, 3 weeks at xmas, 3 to 4 weeks for easter (it seems to vary every year), 1 week for spring and summer half terms, 8 weeks over the summer.

It depends entirely in the school.

If you look at the schools website they will havevterm dates.

Ds1 and dds school are often similar but, in spite of being in the same town dd just had a full week longer this last christmas.

They decide and set their win holidays. There isn't a big private school calendar

Thanks. I looked at some of the schools around here but there weren't any dates on their websites. I've got a rough idea now. Cheers.

Depends on the school.

My DC are at a boarding prep school and have just had 3 1/2 weeks off for Xmas.

Easter is also 31/2 weeks, starting the end of March.

Summer breaks ups around 13th Jul until 11th Sept.

Each term has a weeks half term as well.

The school day is long though 8.10 to 6pm 4 days a week and until 4pm Weds and Sats.
About 3 Saturdays off a term as well for exeat weekends that start Friday lunchtimes.

Check with the school's callendar.

DC's prep has eight in the summer, four each at xmas and easter. Plus a one week, and two two week half terms.

It always amuses me that private schools charge you a fortune and don't even look after you children for most of the year!

petitdonkey · 26/01/2011 09:17

We have four weeks off this Easter!! They break up on March 31st and go back May 3rd Shock!

We then break up for summer on July 8th. Normally we just have the usual one week half terms but an extra week at Christmas.

They do a longer day than any state school I know though and I love the long holidays.

LIZS · 26/01/2011 09:23

It is usually around 17/18 weeks spread across the year. State are around 13/14. Independent Secondaries around here tend to go back earlier than Prep and have a 2 week Autumn half term (not necessarily in synch)

BigBadMummy · 26/01/2011 09:25

My children have around 15 - 16 weeks in total. But then they do Saturdays.

If you are considering private school, please consider the impact Saturday school will have on your life!!

And the day is long too.

It was a nightmare a few years back when Easter was either very late or very early - I forget which - and my daughter (at a state school) had only one or two days of Easter holiday overlapping with my son (independent school).

LadySanders · 26/01/2011 11:10

i don't think the point of private schools is to 'look after your children', it's to educate them.

"i don't think the point of private schools is to 'look after your children', it's to educate them."

Sorry - it was just a gentle tease!

mumoverseas · 26/01/2011 14:54

It varies greatly. DS and DD are in different schools and sometimes have different school holidays.
They both had 3 weeks at Christmas (DS had a few extra days as his school tends to break up on the Wednesday as opposed to the Friday.
DD has 1 week in Feb half term, DS has an extra 2 days.
Easter, 3 weeks for one, 3 weeks and 2 days for the other etc.
summer, DS breaks up 1st July and DD around 8th (they are talking of changing last day of school due to Royal Wedding - something to do with a day in lieu) Confused

mumoverseas · 26/01/2011 14:57

bugger, hadn't finished Blush
DS's school goes back normally end of August and DD goes back 4th September. Both (thank god) normally have the same two weeks in Oct/Nov.
Its fabulous having 4DC in 4 different schools with different holidays Grin

chicaguapa · 26/01/2011 15:48

Thanks everyone. Yes Saturday school would be a pain. The girls' school doesn't do it, but the boys' does.

Stick to this saying I've not seen it fail yet

'The more you pay the less they are there!'

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 26/01/2011 18:05

Yes, Prine Charles visited my DSs school last year, and 'granted' the boys an extra day's holiday Hmm Gee, thanks - Obv did not occur to him that parents are not only paying for that day he gave them off, but that those of who aren't royal now have to arrange & pay for childcare for that day...
