Realistic?

My daughter's school has had letters written to all parents telling us that earrings are are no longer allowed to be worn in school for 'safety reasons'.

Is this realistic?

What age are the children?

It seems to be common practice now, our school won't even let the children out a playtime if they are wearing earrings

onimolap · 17/01/2011 10:45

Yes, it's a very common restriction.

simple stud earrings should be fine?

We have always had this in place at our school. Makes sense to me. I can still remember the mess of someone's ear which got caught in someone elses jumper when I was at primary school!

GoldFrakkincenseAndMyrrh · 17/01/2011 11:51

Yep normal IME. If you've just had your ears pierced a lot of schools require them to be taped.

cornslik · 17/01/2011 11:52

yes stud earrings are the norm in schools

lljkk · 17/01/2011 11:54

When I was a child & teen we had no such proscription, we never even took them off for PE (or taped over or any such).

I don't think it's very realistic, but I guess there's nothing you can do about it :(.

exexpat · 17/01/2011 11:54

I think all earrings were banned at my school (nearly 30 years ago) after a couple of girls had a fight and one ripped the other's earring out, through the lobe. Very messy. But usually they are more worried about sports. Some schools say plain studs are OK, though.

Health and safety innit

Tinuviel · 17/01/2011 12:01

I teach in a secondary school and we don't allow any jewellery! They don't like it but it's for H&S reasons. (Well partly it's because we are not then liable if it gets stolen!)

mrz · 17/01/2011 19:27

If ever had to comfort a young child with a torn ear or one who had stood on a lost stud in bare feet during PE you wouldn't have to ask

onceamai · 17/01/2011 21:41

I think it's absurd. My dd has pierced ears and wears tiny studs. They have to be removed for PE. At least once a month she loses a pair of earrings because of this. I was at school in the 70's and this wasn't an issue and I don't recall anyone ripping an ear. I could understand it if they were playing contact sports but they aren't.

It's an extension of small minded school marmish pettyness.

cornslik · 18/01/2011 09:42

of all the things to get upset about Hmm blimey

peanutbutterkid · 18/01/2011 12:31

I can't understand either why this was never an issue when I was at school, either. If it really is that dangerous, we should have had loads of accidents. I can't remember any. Confused

onceamai · 18/01/2011 19:44

But you know I did so enjoy having a word with the HT at DD's old primary school when some male teachers were turning up for work in the very hot weather in tee shirts - when every single child at the school was expected to wear a collar and tie!!! If you make draconian rules the entire community lives by them in my opinion.

mrz · 19/01/2011 16:57

It was certainly an issue when I was at school even in 6th form we weren't allowed jewellery of any kind.
