Redoing GCSEs for Adults

I happened to see a thread earlier in which mums were discussing how they wish they could get back in to education and complete GCSES (over the age of 19).
I work at a Learn Direct training centre and thought it would be good to share on here that here, if you have not previously achieved A-C GCSE Maths/English, you can complete this for free. This can be done at home or at a learning centre (ours is based in the Midlands) but they are nation wide. The qualification is a Level 2 GCSE equivalent named the Certificate in Adult Num/Lit at Level 1/2
I really would recommend the method and if anyone wants any information just comment the thread :)

ajball29 · 31/10/2016 20:22

The course i wanting to do accepts maths equivalent as iv spoke to them about it its just finding somewhere that does it

Entry level is not the same as level 2. Level 2 numeracy is sometimes, but not always, accepted. Speak to your local further education college. They will be running these courses, but you may have to wait for the next one to start, or they can signpost you to other accredited providers who may run similar at community based venues.

Could I have more info on this please?

LIZS · 31/10/2016 22:22

More info on what? The basic premise is that anyone who did not achieve a pass at GCSE ( or level 2 equivalent) in English and/or Maths (A* - C) can currently retake it via government funded courses for free. The first port of call should be your local further education provider. You may be able to do it via distance learning but you need to make sure the course is fully accredited and funded by SFA.

Entry level is pre-GCSE.
Level 1 is roughly equivalent to GCSE grades D to G and level 2 grades A*-C.
But if you are thinking of taking/retaking GCSEs in Maths and English to obtain a grade C, you cannot put if off much longer. There are only limited opportunities to retake the old syllabus and obtain a grade C for all learners (the last opportunity to do is probably June 2017) as these exams are the first to be reformed to the new 9-1 grades (first examinations June 2017).
It is also possible that the level 2 equivalents will be reformed at a future date as well to bring them more into line with the new GCSEs.
