ds2 recently started nursery in the afternoons, which had been going really well.
Brought the kids new shoes the weekend before last and ds2 got boots that do up with a zip, beczause all the other that fitted him had laces, so i though that with practice he could do them himself.

got a letter from nuresery on friday, saying, please buy willima new shoes this weekend that he can do up himself as we do not have the tiem to do your childs shoes up!
i haven't brought him any new shoes yet as i had been at work all weekend and really am not sure that i want to, the zips are just a biot stiff because they are new, once he gets used to them he will be able to do them.

what would you do? (am going to see the teacher tomorrow lunch time to discuss with her)

A bit of WD40 carefully sprayed onto the zips might make them easier to do up.

A new PE teacher at dd's school informed parents that all children would henceforth need an extra pair of trainers, to be kept in school at all times. She soon got short shrift from the parents, esp those with more than one child at school!

Those of you who say that the nursery should be able to insist on velcro presumably thingk it is OK to either ruin my child's feet or deny her an education.

Vickiumum had no option to buy velcro even if she had been warned in advance due to the width of his foot.

I have been told by several different shoe shops that my dd must not wear velcro shoes due to her instep.

The nursery can make requests but can not insist and in this case their request is unreasonable.

I think the Nursery is out of order. A zip shows you are attempting to hekp them, and if velcro isn't available then hard luck to them. I WOULD NOT waste my money on a second pair (but I would probably send him in his wellies to see how they react to that).

If they're only worn indoors anyway, could you send slippers? I mean the £3 from Asda type!

But TBH, I would be really annoyed at this.

id ont see how the nursery can complain about helping kids to do their shoes up. its all part and parcel with the package, children need to be shown to know how to do it, and people on here are right even with velcro they need someone to check they are on tight enough so whats the difference.

id stick to my guns, send the slippers for indoors and keep his shoes for going home time, if they complain its up to them, dont put him in shoes that are unsuitable for his feet because they say so!

well went into nursery today and explained that ds2 has zip boots because we couldn't get any others with velcro, the only ones in the whole of reading in hisd size were lace ups. i explained he can do the zips up, but it takes him a while and that with use they would get easier. offered to send in slippers for him to wear indoors, but apparently thats against health and safety!

i worked in a nursery for several years and honestly thought that doing up shoes, coats was part and parcel of working in one. i can honestly say that it never bothered me in the slightest.

as i have given in on the tracksuit bottoms (personally hate tracksuit bottoms) and had offered alternatives for his footwear i am going to stand by my decision and keep sending him in with the boots, and jsut encourage him to try and do them himself.

perhaps they just thought he couldnt manage the zips? he clearly cant do them himself

Slippers are a H&S issue? In what way I wonder? My DD's nursery has them - I always have to buy her 2 pairs of slippers, one for nursery and one for home.

happymerryberries · 04/10/2005 18:22

Do you think it is because some slippers are mules and the kids could trip and fall? Or the 'fun' 'scooby doo' type things that are big and bulky and kids might fall over?

lccl · 05/10/2005 14:58

suedonim, why do the kids need shoes for PE in the first place, never mind a second pair?!

suedonim · 05/10/2005 15:57

The new teacher is a bit of a health & fitness freak, Iccl, and anticipated taking the children to the playing field for just about every lesson she can, not just PE. But this is flippin' Scotland, for goodness sake, not some South Sea island! I think the children have been down there once or twice, on regular PE days, thus far. And the weather isn't going to get any better from now on, is it? I would have been hopping mad if I'd bought dd more trainers and then she'd worn them just a couple of times before growing out of them.

The teacher adopted a little boy from Asia a few years ago. Within days of this 2yo little scrap arriving in the UK, he looked like some mini-athlete, always dressed in jogging suits or footie outfits and trainers and being hauled off to play sport somewhere or other. Not that I'm knocking sport but I think there's a bit more to Britain than sport alone!

why do they need shoes for PE? [bemused emoticon]

suedonim · 05/10/2005 17:56

No idea, Enid - we were all as bemused as you! The thing is, we've heard no more about it - PARENTS ROOL!

vickiyumyum · 05/10/2005 20:09

ds2 did his boots up himself today! i wiped some furniture polish on the zip and they do up very easily now.
but to be honest i'm sure half of it is laziness on the childrens part, becuase even though ds2 can do them up now and can do up velcro ones when he has them, when you first ask him he always says 'i can't' when you know full well that he can, its the same with pulling his trousers up too! hes just a lzy boy when it comes to dressing himself, thankfully hes not lazy in all areas of his life.
