Scholarship at 14+

almostmadeitto2011 · 31/12/2010 21:07

Has anyone's child sat a scholarship at 14+?

Is it possible, I've seen 13+ and 16+?

Would it seem as very odd by an independent school if I inquired as to whether they do 14+ scholarships?

So, to go ito yr 10?

I haven't seen one tbh.

Why? have you missed the boat for 13+?

I have never heard of a school doing a 14+ entrance scholarship. Entry to schools is usually possible on an ad hoc basis at any point, but scholarships are only usually awarded at the main entrance points (7/8+, 11+, 13+ and 16+) when it is feasible to run a scholarship exam for all potential candidates (entry and coming up through the school).

Means tested bursaries might be available but I would be surprised if any scholarships would be.

Still, does no harm to ask.

I foolishly ummed and ahhed too long with regards to 13+, and my dd is very keen to go - and her attitude is, if she doesn't try she can't go, and if she does try and doesn't succeed then oh well nothing lost.

I think then I will speak to the school, but be much more prepared for the 16+. And do it for sixth form.

Most indie schools wouldn't accept new children in year 10 as the children well have usually started their GCSE courses by then. There are plenty of scholarships at 16 if she performs well.

But what year is your child in now? Just because she may have missed the deadline, if she is still in Year 8 she can probably still sit as a late entrant. If she has just completed first term of year 9 you could phone to see if she could move immediately, but of course there won't be a chance of a scholarship as such.

Almost, your best bet is to prepare for 16+ as moving now would disrupt GCSE courses.

Our school does entrance scholarships for all years. Although the usual joining times are Y7 Y9 and sixth form I'm pretty sure they are open to anyone at anytime. Look at the school website and it should give you details otherwise just ring the bursar.

I wouldn't want to move DCs once they had started GCSE courses though. Very disruptive.
