Siblings in the same year

Not sure where to put my question!

I have always wondered does anyone have children that are in the same school year?

What I am trying to say is do you have a child born say September (at the beginning of school year) and another child in August (at the end of school year), so they are nearly a year apart but same school year.

I worked in a school that had siblings in the same year - the little boy was a September baby and his sister was born in the August of the following year.

I have it the other way round, there's only just over a year between my two littlies, but because the smallest one's birthday is September, there's actually two school years between them.

ChasingSquirrels · 28/12/2010 10:02

not quite the same but my son's class has 3 different sibling sets with less the 2 years between them. Our school is quite small and so has mixed year classes (yr1&2, yr3&4, yr4&5) so every other year the siblings are in the same class.

Do you have a specific concern about it, or just wanting to talk to others in the same position?

duckyfuzz · 28/12/2010 10:06

I teach 2 sisters in the same year, birthdays 9 months apart

CaptainNancy · 28/12/2010 10:09

I know of a september child followed by july triplets!!!

I take it yours is a singleton? Congratulations anyway Smile

fel1x · 28/12/2010 10:11

Yes I have a friend whose 2 children Sep and July birthdays started school together this year. They love being in the same class Smile

2 kids in the same year used to be called 'Irish Twins'

mrz · 28/12/2010 13:41

Slightly different but in our FSU (ages 3-5) there are 4 children from the same family (3 sisters and a brother) and 3 brothers from another.

itsawonderfuldarleneconnorlife · 28/12/2010 20:12

There were 2 brothers in my year at school. A bit of jealousy, I think but no big deal.

Littlefish · 28/12/2010 22:11

One school I worked in will have a family with children in years:

5, 3, 2, 1, Rec and Nursery all at the same time!

mrz - that's incredible!

EvilTwinsAteRudolph · 28/12/2010 22:14

I used to teach a brother and sister who were in the same year (Secondary) Everyone just assumed they were twins.

nightofthelivingdead · 28/12/2010 22:52

I was in the same class as my half brother, everyone thought we were twins too, odd looks when people realised we had different Mums though! my youngest are sept 09 and sept 10 just missed them being in the same year.

spanieleyes · 29/12/2010 12:09

We currently have a family with children in yrs 6,5,4,1 and Reception and a grandchild in Nursery! ( and 5/6 and R/1 are mixed year groups so the same class!)

racmac · 29/12/2010 12:31

We have mixed classes so i will have 2 children in the same class in alternate years.

So next year DS3 will start Reception and DS2 will be in year 1 but they are a mixed class Grin

hatsybatsy · 04/01/2011 11:46

a family friend had daughters born september and august so were both in the same class right through school.

was a problem as the younger one was brighter so that didn't help the older one's self confidence.

But - both are now at uni and doing well so acn't have been all that bad!

fridayschild · 04/01/2011 15:32

I have a terribly clever colleague who was pushed up a year, meaning he was in the same class as his older brother. My colleague describes this experience as "a bit of a strain"....

Oh yes 'Irish twins'. This wasn't rare when I was grwoing up. Rarer now probably.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 05/01/2011 16:08

I taught a girl in Reception whose 9 month old younger brother was in a parallel Reception class.

tjacksonpfc · 05/01/2011 17:13

Jhave 15 months between dcs but due to birthdays 2 school years apart.

dd yr 2 july bday.

ds reception oct bday.

ampere · 05/01/2011 19:12

There were 2 sisters on our school bus at the convent school who were 11 months apart and in teh same class and even looked very similar. Must've been difficult!

I asked my Obstetrician, when DS1 was 6 weeks old, what was the minimum age gap he'd suggest (I was knocking on a bit so needed to 'plan') He said as soon as you want but make sure they won't be in the same school year!

I recall the look of pure horror on my DB's face when I walked into his class, 'tray' in hand. He was 10, I was 8 (2 years + 2 weeks apart)! Village primary with 3 classes, 4-11, so the top class had the brighter 8 year olds through to the 'held back' 12 year olds.

ampere · 05/01/2011 19:15

And my DSs and their 2 (DS) friends cover Y5,6,7 and 8. There's 2 years and 10 months between them, eldest to youngest.

Age and school years are a funny thing, aren't they?

tiggyhop · 05/01/2011 19:21

Our school teaches 3-6 year olds then 6-9 year olds. My three were all in together - now they are 5,6 and 7 the 6 and 7 year old are in together.

lizziemun · 05/01/2011 19:54

DD1 has 2 siblings in her year. There is about 6/7mths between them. Both children were born early 1st one at 31weeks and the second born at 27weeksish.
