Help!!! Times Tables

dizzydo · 28/09/2005 10:25

My DD (aged 8)is supposed to know all her times tables by now (2's through to 12's). She had more or less got them licked before the Summer holidays but now, (I confess due to lack of practice) appears to have completely forgotten them and is EXTREMELY reluctant to start practising again. Anyone successfully mastered teaching this effectively and making it fun at the same time. Help please!!

HAve you tried the musical tapes from ELC ????

binkie · 28/09/2005 10:37

Would an online game help? I've just put a link this morning on a separate thread to a maths games website I found - it's got one for multiplication. It might help if she's a visual learner, as it shows you the patterns.

YES Binkie, I saw that thread and was wondering if it might have tables on there. She would definitely be interested in anything computer driven. Thanks, I will have a look at that when I get home, at work at the moment

RTK have tried the tapes but she's not overly keen.

Thanks for the replies, anyone else??

I know you said your DD isn't that impressed with tapes but this is slightly different.

Times table cd

It is the tables to music but varying styles of pop music. Well worth it. I have bought it and DD (also 8) loves it and it works! Mind you, you won't get it out of your head lol

Also try here The table mountain challenge is good fun, and the timer one.

sammac · 28/09/2005 21:51

I love it too yoyo!

Might have to move to Kent!

kiwibelle · 28/09/2005 22:09

wangle... have you purchased this cd? Did you do it online or is it available in stores? Tx

wangle99 · 28/09/2005 22:10

I purchased it online - downloaded it and burnt it onto a CD.

We generally do it in the car on the way to school, passes the time and is fresh in her mind when she gets there!

Oh thank you so much for those suggestions. Will get online at the weekend and try them all out.

I have just written a times table tester for my daughter which can be found at kershaw kids . You will find it in the classroom. She enjoys testing herself and has improved as a result. The verbal reasoning part isn't finished yet but the other parts should work fine.

Kama - an even easier way is to tell your child to put both hands in front of them. For 9x3 put the third finger down. Fingers remaining are 2 and 7 which is the answer. 9x4, put 4th finger down 3 and 6 remain, etc.

sansouci · 30/09/2005 10:19

I learned my times tables & french verbs by chanting them:

one seven is seven,
two sevens are fourteen,
three sevens are twenty-one,
etc.

(thanks, mum. still have perfect recall some 30 yrs later!)
