Name change here. Please is there anyone who can give me some advice regarding DD. DD started uni in October and realised that the course was just not the right one for her.

She intends to take a gap year and re-apply for next year.

She withdrew from her current course on 29 November and has yesterday received a letter saying that she must repay immediately £900+ in tuition fees for the six weeks she was at uni. She had no idea that this would be required. She (and we) thought any debts would only have to be repaid when she was earning. In fact we have now discovered that if she had withdrawn from her course form 5th December onwards, this is exactly what would have happened.

DD only left shcool this year and has no savings or any means with which to repay this. Shes ill with worry now and dosent know what to do. Shes also very upset that her uni didnt inform her that if she had waited a few more days, payment would have been deferred.

I feel we have been naive in not knowing enough about the system and have let her down. Please can anyone who may have been in the same situation give us any advice?

She will be able to set up a payment plan of about £20 per week. If she can't afford it then how is she funding her gap year.

If anything, this is exactly why many (silent) tax payers do not want to be paying for tuition fees if students drop out without a thought.

meant to say £20 per month.

When I say gap year, I dont mean it is going to be doing something that is going to cost a fortune like travelling or somehing. She has a four hour a week part time job and is hoping to increase hours/find an alternative job although this seems unlikely.

She has simply made a mistake. Far from dropping out without a thought the reverse is true. She didnt think she would get the required grades to be able to do what she really wanted to do but as it turned out she did but was unable to transfer. She hopes to reapply and get accepted for next year.

£20 a week repayment out of her current job is not possible.

Sorry crossed posts! £20 a month would be doable, just, I think.

can't you make the payments and then re-arrange a manageable scheme with your daughter for her to repay you
